Timmy Kokke …just sorting my bubbles…

Yesterday I got the email welcoming me to the First Annual WinPHP Challenge. Microsoft, ibuildings and Leaseweb are sponsoring this contest to show Windows is now a first class citizen for development and deployment of PHP projects.

The idea of this contest is very simple, just build an application running on Windows and IIS7. But, do this with PHP. The contests ends June 1st. Until then all contestants have to blog about their progress. On June 13th the winner will be announced at the DPC closing keynote.

For a while now I’ve been thinking about developing my own blog engine. Mainly to host my own blog, but I would like to give my friends and everyone else the opportunity to host their blogs using my engine as well. This contest would be the perfect opportunity to realize this.

Ease of use will be my no.1 priority. I want the user to be able to “style” the entire blog with a few clicks. Colors can be chosen from The server will than take care of the rest of the design and generating a css file. All images with rounded corners and panels with gradients will be generated by the server. When publishing a post, email messages and tweets are send and the rss feeds is updated.

The application uses a normal MsSql server database, which stores all user information, posts, comments and tags. The blogs will be optimized for search engines with easy to read urls. Editing of the blog can be done with Windows Live Writer or online. Authentication will be handled with Windows Live ID, although I might implement OpenID too if I can make it in time.

At this point I did some testing with different services and installed windows 2008 web server, IIS7, php and sql server. I’ve create a few logos. I haven’t decided which I’m going to use yet.

I leave it to this for now… I’ve got some programming to do ;-)
