New Storm Worm Spreading Via Blog Posts
Heads up GWB posters and readers. Keep an eye on your posts and comments. When a user with an infected system visits a bulletin board or posts to a blog, the worm inserts a malware into his or her comments. The line asks readers to look at a fun video and contains a link leading to a Web site where the malware is waiting to reinfect more users. Read New Storm Worm Spreading Via Blog Posts ......

Extend the Range of Your Zune FM Transmitter
The transmitter I use to listen to my Zune in the car is an old one that came with my XM radio years ago. It works fairly well, but when I get close to another car on the highway transmitting on the same frequency the signal goes to crap. If your having the same problem this hack will show you how to modify the transmitter and boost the strength. While it applies specifically to the Zune FM transmitter, the lessons learned could be applied to most FM transmitters. Warning: I'm not sure how legal ......

5 .NET Podcasts
I found a post by Sean Deasy that lists the 5 podcasts every developer should listen to: Hanselminutes .NET Rocks! ArCast Polymorphic Podcast ASP.NET Podcast Here is what I think of each of them. Hanselminutes is tied with .NET Rocks for the best of the bunch. Scott Hanselman covers interesting topics, not always related to .NET, that are short and to the point. I think the show would flow a little better with Carl Franklin. .NET Rocks has the best guests and usually covers interesting topics. It's ......

Apple TV - Late Plus No Cables
Now if this was Microsoft shipping an Xbox late without cables everybody would be screaming bloody murder. But since it's "do no wrong" Apple, all I am seeing are a lot of "we understand" style excuses. "We need to give them time to make a great product" or "It's better than shipping crappy cables" type stuff. Don't get me wrong, some people are complaining, they're just not doing it as loudly or are harshly as they would with Microsoft. Any else notice this? That the industry is bent toward being ......

5 Most Common Passwords

The movie Hackers claimed the most used passwords were password, God and secret.  Looks like they only got one right.

Here are the top 5 passwords according to Counterpane Internet Security:

  1. password1
  2. abc123
  3. myspace1
  4. password
  5. blink182

3 and 5 really surprised me.

Bravia Slogan is Stupid
I don't know if you have seen a commercial yet for Bravia, Sony's brand name for it's high definition LCDs. But the slogan is this: Bravia, the world's first television for men and women, Trademark Sony. WTF?! What TV in the world does not match this description. Maybe a SpongeBob or Princess television for kids, but when did TVs get made specifically for men or women? This is just stupid. Where does Sony get off claiming its made the world's first television for men and women. Who the hell is in ......

Clippy is dead Microsoft, just let it go.
It seems Microsoft just can't let go of Clippy. Yesterday I attended the Vista / Office launch in St. Louis, and while Clippy himself did not make an appearance, his dog did. I guess Microsoft just can't stand to have a presentation without some annoying cartoon character jumping around the screen, so we were treated to a dancing Scooby-Doo while we waited. Maybe this is what happens when you bury Clippy in Stephen King's Pet Sematary. If you're into this sort of thing (shame on you), you can get ......

Rough Cuts is a program offered by O'Reilly that lets you get access to beta versions of books while they are being written. The publication date is set as the 26th (four days away) and the Rough Cut only contains 3 very unfinished chapters, two of which ARE EXACTLY THE SAME. Washing a Cat
Put both lids of the toilet up and add 1/8 cup of pet shampoo to the water in the bowl. Pick up the cat and soothe him while you carry him towards the bathroom. In one smooth movement, put the cat in the toilet and close both lids. You may need to stand on the lid. The cat will self agitate and make ample suds. Never mind the noises that come from the toilet, the cat is actually enjoying this. Flush the toilet three or four times. This provides a "power-wash and rinse". Have someone open the front ......

Is ASP.NET Too Easy?
This seems like one of those questions like: Is my girlfriend too hot? or Do I have too much money? Those are problems we love to live with. Mads Kristensen has a blog post where he discusses how easy it is to build a website with Visual Studio and questions if that is a good thing. He discussed the designer and drag-and-drop methods of development where, in the end, you don't learn anything and that can be bad. I agree the designer hides a lot. Aging Gamers Need More Console Love
Okay, so here is a little gaming history on me. I started as a traditional pen-and-paper D&D gamer way back in the 80s and I played the classic "Gold Box" games like Pools of Radiance. But at some point, I grew up, got a job, got married and had kids. With each transition came less and less time for games. Now I find that I have no time for lengthy gaming endeavors such as D&D, World of Warcraft, or even Oblivion. What I have found as a fun replacement are the transitional board games that ......

Steve Jobs on DRM
I know, I know, too many Apple posts the last couple of days. If you haven't seen this yet, it's a letter posted on Apple's site from Steve Jobs talking about music. He doesn't do this very often so it's getting a lot of attention. It's primarily in response to the building anti-trust issues with Apple's dominance in the digital music market, which is misguided since the real problem are the music companies. To break it down: Apple won't license it's DRM because it will be cracked and the crack can't ......

What Would Make You Switch to Apple?
I made a tongue-in-cheek comment about why I don't switch to Mac OS X on a recent post to which Jeff Julian made a comment that got me thinking. What would it take to get you to switch to Apple? For me it would take a two-punch combo: Visual Studio for the Mac or an equally good development environment for Ruby on Rails. (I mostly do web development.) A music and video subscription model to iTunes. If I could get that, I would seriously consider trading in my laptop, Zune and Xbox for a MacBook, ......

Dear Microsoft, I understand that you are trying to go for a unified interface for the Zune just like iTunes. But would it kill you to add support for TV shows recorded by Windows Media Center so we don't have to do things like this? In the short term: Please add .dvr-ms support in the next minor Zune software update. It's not that hard and I'm not asking for anything special. Just have them show up under videos. In the long term: Please add a TV section to compliment Music, Videos, Podcasts (you ......

Why open-source software development environments are crap
I think the guy that wrote this article just woke up one morning and thought, "Let's see how many people I can piss off today." Here is what he has to say about his experience with open-source IDEs. They were slow, flaky and frustrating. I very soon abandoned the Java world – I couldn’t stand the tools, the debuggers were crap or non-existent and the documentation was sparse one-dimensional and uninspiring. There is nothing out there in the open source world that can begin to compete with the fluidity ......

REALbasic is a version of BASIC very similar to Visual Basic before the jump to .NET. REALbasic's big claim to fame is the ability to run on Windows, Mac and Linux. Over a year ago I checked it out, and it looked very promising.
