a thump to the brain
When I went to Atlanta last weekend for Code Camp I got up at 2AM and was on the road by 3AM driving to Atlanta. Got there just as registration was opening up and stayed through to the end of the prize drawings arriving home that night at nearly 11PM which made for a really long day. I know a couple of other folks who did similar trips - so I'm wondering who's got the story for the longest trip to Code Camp? I know we had at least one Canadian developer come down to Charleston during our last code ......
First of all - a huge thanks to all those folks in Atlanta who pull this thing together each year. They really do put on a good event in Atlanta and I look forward to it (almost to the point of bugging Jim via e-mail) each year. This was actually my 2nd code camp where I didn't speak...though I did have some slide decks ready in case there were some last minute cancellations. I actually missed a chance to speak since I was helping Bill move furniture while Jim was looking for me to cover a session. ......
A huge thanks to Benefit Focus for providing us with an awesome meeting facility and to TEKSystems for providing the food! We had a really awesome presentation given by Karl Shifflett on one of the projects he's been developing for a few months now called Mole. Karl introduced me to Mole a few months ago via e-mail and chat on Community-Credit's discussion forums and I've been a fan since. I was floored that he accepted my invitation to come down to Charleston (a nice 3 hour drive from Charlotte) ......
I'm doing a little experiment. Today's my birthday and I'm wondering with regards to the
Birthday Paradox how many people out there reading this share the same birthday. If you do - comment on this entry. Thanks! :)
So April Fool's day is right around the corner and I'm a little like a kid on Christmas Eve wondering what Google will pull this year....well OK maybe not quite like a kid on Christmas Eve, but I'm still anxious to see what they'll do. What's your favorite Google prank from year's past? For me it's a toss up between MentalPlex and Pigeon Ranking ......

OK - so I'm joking but really - having spent my fair share of time making, running, and maintaining huge amounts of cable in all manner of places I can't see why someone would A) Want to do this for fun and B) Show that they are the best at it. Apparently the winner got a $50 gift card to a nice Italian restaurant. Maybe I'm just getting closed minded in my old age :) http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/... ......

I ran into an interesting survey/blog about XP -v- Vista and I started thinking myself how many times I've switched back and forth between the two. Currently I'm running XP on my host machine with a Windows Server 2003 and a Windows Vista VPC available as I need them for testing, development, etc. I remember when I first loaded Vista on an older laptop that was "Vista Capable" but that laptop grew more sluggish with Vista and I soon switched back to XP while in the process of learning "Vista Capable" ......
A while back I wrote about a little app I started working on that gives me back control of my phone - basically a configurable call blocker. All was fine and good with the world until a family emergency hit - and I had to abandon all development and basically everything for about 2 weeks...so my little app was left in a bit of an unpolished stage though it had worked well enough for the time. Fast forward to yesterday when I was talking to my wife and *poof* we get disconnected. Turns out my little ......
This just rocks - if you are a mobile developer that is...take a look for yourself.
Sweet - so it's supposed to come out later this year and will work with Windows Mobile 6 devices. It'll be a browser plug-in and you can use Expression for it...but before you get too excited, it'll only support Silverlight 1.0 in this release.
See the Silverlight site for more info.
While I've read that the audio device which Virtual PC uses is not officially supported under Windows 2003 Server, I did find a blog entry which somewhat explained how to get it working. I offer my version of what worked based on my trial and errors with the original blog. Either mount the ISO or load the Windows XP product CD so you can access it via your Windows 2003 VPC Create a folder on your VPC desktop called "sound" (we just need it for a bit) On the CD, navigate to the i386 directory and ......
I'm currently using an HP dv9000 which has worked well but it's moving to another project so I'm getting a new laptop for work. I've personally had good experiences (for the most part) with my HP though several co-workers have had horrible experiences with theirs so I'm looking at other vendors besides HP...so what has anyone else been using that is a rock solid laptop for development?
I saw a news article today about a bug in the Cassini spacecraft's software which prevented it from collecting much anticipated data during a fly-by of one of Saturn's moons. Not only has that got to be monumentally disappointing to those expecting the data, but also to those who developed that software and tested it. It's not like they can just release a patch to fix the problem. Wow.
So the experiment I was working on the other day was successful and now I'm in the process of applying it to other selected servers. In short what I set out to do was to take an existing server I had running, and virtualize it so I could change things as needed and move the "server" to other physical network environments as needed for testing. To do this I've taken an HP DV9000 laptop with 2GB of RAM and am using it as the virtual PC host. The other steps are outlined below: Create a blank VPC with ......
I actually got to witness this first hand a couple of years back when it was in earlier research stages...and got to experience first-hand the effects (it feels like it burns!) when I decided I had to "feel it to believe". Take a look at this video on Yahoo - it really is like science fiction come true. http://cosmos.bcst.yahoo.co... Just like the reporter in this video - as soon as you move away from the beam the feeling vanishes and there's no lasting effect, but it sure ......
Just started work again on an old project that was shelved about a year and a half ago. When the project was shelved we did an Acronis image of the servers that hosted the project and put those on our network storage in case we ever needed them again, then re-purposed the server hardware and pressed on. Fast forward to now and there's renewed interest in the project - and the customer wants to know how quickly we can restore the project to the way it was. Well the original hardware is long since ......
