I have had it.  Yesterday morning I wanted to put a few files on CD, sounds simple enough.  Well for some reason the CD/RW drive was being recognized as a regular CD drive.  I rebooted the machine and the drive was now recognized as a CD/RW drive.

Last night I was again putting files on a CD.  All was going well until the end of the process.  When again the drive was no longer being recognized as a CD/RW drive!  That I didn't get as it was in the middle of burning a CD.  Again I had to reboot, problem solved.

I am losing my patience with this laptop.

I have an 8500 and love it. Are you sure it is a hardware issue and and a software one? When is the last time you repaved your machine? As a developer, you should repave your machine about every 6 months. We tend to accumulate lots of stuff on our drives, and this is the best way to clean it up (besides doing everything in a VPC).

I repaved the machine a few weeks ago. I stopped using that machine to develop on, after the display went.

I loved the machine when I first got it. I didn't have great concern when the HD crashed I figured those things do happen and Dell replaced the HD at no charge. After the display went I started to become concerned. A freind of mine purchased a Dell laptop and the display went after only one month. Then the power button challenge came along, I have to turn the machine on and off at least 4 times before it finally decides to boot up. Another freind of mine had a Dell laptop too and had nothing but problems so he has sinced moved on to an IBM laptop.

Generally I am a Dell fan, I have a NAS server that I am happy with as well as a rack mounted tape drive. I have suggested to a few people to purchase Dell desktop computers and they have been happy with them. It just seems lateley that Dell laptops have been causing quite a few people some headaches.
