Russell Peters Rocks My World

Tuesday, September 18, 2007 4:53 PM
There is a new face to Canadian comedy...Michael J. Fox, Alan Thicke, Bod and Doug McKenzie, Dan Akroyd, even what's-his-name who played the dad on American Pie...gone, done, has beens. The new face of Canadian Comedy is without a doubt Russell Peters.

Although he lives in LA now and has been doing comedy for almost 20 years, this Toronto native has really hit his stride in recent years with famous bits such as "Somebody's gonna get a hurt", "Chinese guy gives a deal...34.50", and other bits strewn over YouTube.

I went to see him live tonight where he showcased an almost 2 hour set (no intermission) with entirely new material, and it rocked the house. As usual, his jokes tended to focus on the humorous stereotypes of race (the dude is Indian, even though his name wouldn't give that away), and nobody is safe: whether he's asking the Latinos in the crowd how they got enough money to get into the show, to commenting on how Portugese people sound like deaf people talking Spanish, to how cheap his own Indian people are...but the thing with RP is that everyone in attendance knows its the stereotypes being digged at and not the people.

He even comments about, although a tragedy, how the irony of the 2006 train bombings in Mumbai escaped the media. Those bombings occured on July 11. That's right: 7/11.

I've just realized that I've made him out to be an insensitive racist ass-clown...but trust me: the guy is hilarious. If you get a chance to see him on tour, go. If you haven't heard of him, check out his act on You Tube or through one of his DVD's available (Outsourced is classic)

So one final question, since he brought it up in a bit discussing the difference between the USA and Canada: Is it true that you guys don't have ketchup flavored potato chips?!

I'm surprised! While on your trek to Arizona you never got a midnight craving for ketchup chips, ended up out at the Wal-Mart, and hunted for them in vain? (Or did you not do the AZ vacation?)

Anyway the jist is there's no ketchup chips. And our McDonald's never has served pizza. (Although I suppose yours hasn't for the last ten years or so.) And only a few people out here know what a perogie is. 9/18/2007 5:34 PM | Lorin Thwaits

Alas I wasn't one of the few Canucks who went down to the Desert Code Camp. :(

You guys have *never* had pizza at a McDonalds?! Wow...you're right, we haven't had them for a number of years, but you guys missed out.

How can only a few people know what a perogie is?! Weren't there *SOME* Ukranian settlers that went south of the border?! I'm guessing the term head-cheese isn't well known either...

D'Arcy, I'm sure there are a few Green Bay fans who are cheese heads though!

My sister's moved to Australia and the last couple of times I've talked to her she's been bitching about cravings for her favorite flavor of chips.... Ketchup. She says she'll settle for All Dressed which they don't have down there either.

She's been asking me to send her a care package with those flavors, hot sauce, and if there was any way possible, some cruller doughnuts (again they don't have them). She heard of a place in Sydney, drove 45 minutes to find a bakery, only to find something that was completely unlike a Cruller.

That being said they do have chicken flavored chips... which is just plain disturbing.... Plain chicken flavored chips.... Think about that one for a sec.

I propose a cultural exchange... We could send them our Old Dutch chips if they'd send us Tim Tams (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Tam) To which I became hopelessly addicted to in the few weeks I was down there last year. 9/19/2007 6:55 PM | Cam
