IPod to Zune: What will it take?

Tuesday, November 21, 2006 9:02 AM

I've been looking more into the Zune lately, and I'm very excited for them to come to Canada...but then I was talking with a buddy who recently got one and he informed me that the much talked about rumors of Microsoft giving you every song you've purchased through iTunes for free is just that: rumor.

So that got me thinking...how is Microsoft going to try and justify to all those people who have bought hundreds of songs through ITunes to just up and switch to the Zune marketplace? There's no way that I'm going to spend the better part of a day burning all my purchased songs to CD, then ripping them to MP3, then importing them into another player...and one that doesn't work on my Mac btw.

I think what Microsoft is offering is excellent...but I just can't see enough justification for people already entrenched into the ITunes world to switch.

And there it is. The problem with iTunes. Now your technically adept, so I am sure you could find some program "wink wink" to remove the DRM, but the average person is stuck. Zune will produce the same problem. I have purchased maybe 20 songs with DRM over the years so it's not a big deal to me. I prefer the rental model. If iTunes had that I probably would have stayed. 11/21/2006 1:48 PM | Scott Kuhl
