I'm a beta tester for the new D&D MMORPG called D&D Online: Stormreach ( and while I'm not at liberty to disclose any specifics about the game, or the beta experience, I can say this:

It appears to be built upon the .NET Framework. I know this because I saw the .NET runtime executable (dotnetfx.exe) in the list of files being uncompressed by the installer. I wonder if they used the 1.1 or the 2.0 Framework (I'm guessing the 1.1, but you never know), and if they are using the Managed DX, which I would think they are...

Regardless, that's a big fat "neener neener" to those folks who said nobody would ever use .NET for games. haha

(Granted I'm pretty sure it's written in Managed C++, and not VB or C#, but ya never know. Time do some digging around in the GAC.) Posted on Thursday, November 3, 2005 1:44 PM Game Development | Back to top

I think you're probably mistaken.

DDO is built on the Turbine Engine 2.0 - which is not managed code.

They're probably using .NET for the launcher application, or something like that. I'm not in the alpha/beta yet (grrr) but knowing Turbine's games, that's my guess.

That's entirely possible, regardless... I'll do some more digging. :)

It's a minor victory for me anyway, and here's why... One of the biggest arguments I have had to endure when developing my VB.NET RPG is how "nobody" is going to DL the .NET framework and therefore nobody will play my game. So the more mainstream games that require the .NET framework (on any level) can only be a good thing for me...

I'd be a little surprised if they were forcing an install of the .NET framework for "just" a launcher, but again I really don't know just yet.

It's appear that the turbine laucher isn't working with 2.0 ou 3.0 of .NET framework. Since i've got some software that use 2.0, I'm forced to install the 1.1 in a different directory to run the launcher.
That really odd since all the softwares I had and whitch required .net framework work perfectly fine with 2.0.... Damnit Turbine !
