I graduated today with an MBA from Southwestern College, a culmination of three years worth of prep and work.

...Plus it was also my birthday and I got to eat at the Texas Roadhouse at the end of the day.

So why an MBA? A little over three years ago I was looking at a bleak job outlook as the company I was working for at the time was hemorrhaging money and was destined to be sold (and I was correct - it was sold in 2005). Wichita and Kansas were hard hit by the recession after 9/11. I was stuck in pay stagnation, and I had been within 5% of the same pay for 3 years. It was also difficult to find a senior developer job and I was losing job offers to low paid developers or the work was outsourced.

To solve this problem I began a multi-step strategy. Steps 1 and 2 were to take and pass the C# DotNet Web and Windows certifications, which happened shortly thereafter.

The next step was to get an MBA to bolster the soft skills and tie IT into the rest of the business. This was because I was finding myself much more involved in business analysis, obtaining requirements and working with project management.

So where to now? Next is the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification May 30th. Wish me luck.
