Tangible Thoughts SharePoint, MOSS? and all the other questions

Another one of those SharePoint Portal Server mysteries.

Recently a colleague of mine was facing this dilemma. After a restore of a certain teamsite on SPS, the Search results weren't showing the contents. When she tried checking the gather log for the NonPortal Contents index it contained the following error.

“The address could not be found, (0x80042616 - Error in the Site Data Web Service. ) Value cannot be null. Parameter name: uriString”

Unfortunately there is a very non-relevant MS KB article titled as above. But fortunately she was able to find the following newsgroup response that helped.

What has been puzzled is that I am not sure what stssoap was required for. I do know for a fact that stssoap is not present when SharePoint Portal Server 2003 is installed, and I suspect that it is something that SPS 2 Technical Refresh left behind.

Bottom line: If you upgraded from SPS 2 Technical Refresh, and the gatherer log shows the above mentioned error message for Site Directory crawls, then follow this newsgroup response.
