What is the Silverlight Firestarter is all about? It is a one day, global, live streamed and on demand event keynoted by Scott Guthrie. It begins at 9am Pacific time. Yes, that noon for us east coasters here in the U.S. It provides new self-paced labs and walk through videos. It is interactive and you can ask the Silverlight product team questions during the event. To me the really interesting part is going to be the opening keynote by Scott Guthrie. Keynote : The Future of Silverlight Be first to ...
GiveCamp is a weekend-long event where software developers, designers, and database administrators donate their time to create custom software for non-profit organizations. This custom software could be a new website for the nonprofit organization, a small data-collection application to keep track of members, or a application for the Red Cross that automatically emails a blood donor three months after they’ve donated blood to remind them that they are now eligible to donate again. The only limitation ...
In honor of Phil Factor's recent post on SQL Smells, I thought I would post some blogs SQL smells and why some of them are bad as well as when they may be OK. Let's start with the top of the list that Phil has compiled. Use of deprecated syntax such as *= (Dave Howard) There are two problems here. First this is not in compliance with the SQL 92 standard. We should strive our code to be standards compliant whenever there is a standard available. Now this sounds like a cop out along the lines of "Because ...

It’s hard to believe that I just finished my 100th blog post in the past year related to Microsoft.NET Technology. I started this blog on November 11th, 2009 and now 100 blog posts later I am still writing and loving it. This is not the first time that I started a technology blog, but the first time that it actually lasted. I will have to admit that I learned more from writing the articles then most did reading them. =) I sincerely hope that somehow I have assisted the community and helped a developer ...
Phil Factor blogged about his quest for SQL Code Smells. He wants to start some discussions about coding standards and best / worst practices. This is sure to generate a lot of discussion. In fact it already has. Follow the #sqlcodesmells hashtag and you can follow the discussion. I have tweeted several sql code smells of my own. There are also some interesting comments on the blog. There is a debate brewing there about the futility of defining standards, art vs. science arguments, etc. One comment ...

Each year for the last seven Wagga Wagga hosts the annual Code Camp Oz. It is the largest community .NET conference in Australia. For reasons I don’t understand the organisers choose to hold ccoz in Wagga; a location that is inconvenient to everyone. My preferred technique to get there is to fly to Canberra and drive a hire car to Wagga. This year I took advantage of some time in Canberra to catch up with a friend and then work on my presentation, before heading to Wagga Friday night. Aaron Powell ...
PDC stands for Professional Developers Conference, an event regularly hosted by Microsoft, often at Seattle. It is a great opportunity for developers who work with Microsoft products to come together under one roof, get to know about new forthcoming products, be briefed about key technologies ruling the market and finally, mingle with one another. At least that was how it used to be all these years. So what was different this year? This year, when PDC 2010 was being held in the last week of October, ...

I have to admit it. I’ve had fun the last 14 years. Starting a company, not knowing where it would take me. Hiring our first employee, that was kinda scary…Moved away from Delphi and jumped aboard the .net train, without a second of regret. Became a MVP because the company allowed me to spend a lot of time on the community. Saw my first Surface computer while attending a MVP summit in Redmond. Became one of the first 4 Surface MVP’s because the company allowed me to work with that technology extensively ...
During the course of my experiences as a parent and as an active tech community member, I have had opportunities to observe students-- both mentored and not mentored--who have worked on websites and who use technology at various skill levels. I have also heard a LOT of talk from the IT community about the value of diversity in the work force and the lack of diversity in IT. Concern that minority students are not looking at IT positions as likely possibilities for their career choices is a "hot" topic, ...

"I'm ready for church pre-school, Mom!" File this under "No Duh": a mother decided it would be a good idea to dress her 5 yr old son as a girl for a halloween party at the church preschool. Now usually I'd just let the internet take care of this (and honestly, they've been doing a pretty good job), but shockingly the mother claims 98% of comments on her blog support her. She failed her son on so many levels. First, she never bothered to ask "Why do you want to dress as a girl?" "Boo decides he wants ...

The release of the recent update to the Xbox 360’s dashboard has caused quite a commotion among the Xbox LIVE Indie Games (“XBLIG”) community. The primary reasons for this have been a negative response to various changes that have occurred in regards to XBLIG’s look and presence on the Xbox. Unfortunately, what was an “Indie Developers Unhappy With Dashboard Changes” story has been slowly corrupted into a “Microsoft Wants To Kill XBLIG” story. I undoubtedly played a part in that with my post here ...

I was trying to configure Live Writer to publish post on my LD Express. Whilst the initial configuration of blog was fine, the test post and theme download fails. Live Writer KB indicates that community server and similar blog platforms has a delay between post and time it takes for the blog platform to publish the same. I would try to bring the same to the attention of support team to see if this can be fixed and solve.

I promise not to scare off anyone with talks of MVVM, Prism or MEF. 1) The line highlighted below represents the MIME type and ...

I got much support from the community with the SharpBox project on codeplex. To reducing the effort and increasing the simplicity for contributors I decided to move the main repository of SharpBox into the codeplex infrastructure. All developers can check in into main branch without the delay of my shadow copy sync from the internal SVN server. The continuous integration server (CCNET) will perform a full build after every check-in.

So it has been a great few days at TechEd South Africa. There were a few things that stood out. First of all, I couldn’t help but be inspired by Tim Huckaby’s presentations. While they were not technically deep, they gave me a sense of something to strive for. There were a few times during his presentation that I found myself saying in my mind - “Man, we can do that stuff, if only we had the budget”. Well, I guess that isn’t an excuse and so I feel like the bar has been raised from a UI point. Other ...

Chris Nicola left this excellent comment on Justin Etheredge’s blog: Even with a competitive way to do SSJS [(server-side JavaScript)] on the Windows platform, I just have to ask... why would anyone? Server-side JavaScript means that the server portion of a web application is written in JavaScript. Personally, I believe that server-side JavaScript will be the next big advance in web development. If I were Microsoft I would be looking to hit a touchdown out of the ball park with server-side JavaScript, ...

Purchase at Amazon I wanted to talk for a minute about the author, Victor Gaudioso. I posted just the other day about some intricacies with the Windows Phone marketplace. I got some intel that the info that was available was outdated and that the program had changed, but nothing official was available online yet.
