One of the recent perks we have added to the Geekswithblogs.net community is an influencer program made up of those bloggers who have the most influence on the site. Being apart of this program gets you access to some awesome products for review and special contests we run. The latest contest was a free attendee badge for one of our influencers to join @StaffofGeeks at TechEd and as you see from title Chris Williams is our winner. This means Chris will be having the time of his life (well hopefully) ...

This week has been an interesting one. Lots of ups and downs in the XNA Community and lots of things that we’re not sure yet if it’s an up or down. One of the biggest changes that happened was that the Top Downloads list on Xbox.com and on the Xbox dashboard is now calculated differently for Xbox LIVE Indie Games. It’s still not clear what impact this is going to have (although I know it feels pretty clear to some of you in the community!) but this lead to some interesting things. One, we got to ...

I try, I really try, to keep this blog as much about technology and as little about other topics, but honestly its too annoying to try and keep multiple blogs. So, here we are. As you can tell by the title, this will be a religious-based post. If you’re not down with that, that’s kewl…please view another of the fantastic tech-themed posts on my blog or on another GeeksWithBlogs contributor’s blog. Rob Bell. Rob Bell is the pastor of a church in Michigan. I actually used to mock Rob Bell because (sorry ...

As Staff of Geeks is gearing up for Tech-Ed 2011, we’d like to highlight a couple of important tools that you should really be using if you are attending! If not, it’s not too late! Click here for some resources to help convince your boss and learn more! The first tool is Schedule Builder. With over 800 sessions and 250 exhibitors listed in the catalog, it’s important to take time before the event to map out your on-site experience. Why? First and foremost, as Tech-Ed alumni, the number one complaint ...
The list provided below is my “Best-Of” FREE Frameworks, Tools and Controls for Windows Phone 7. I have used everything listed below in an my WP7 applications. Most of them are in the marketplace at this point and some are still in development. Let’s get started. If you are developing WP7 Applications, this is one that you have probably heard of already. It is Microsoft’s official set of controls that comes complete with full source code of course. Project Description: Welcome to the Silverlight ...
After several months of research, review and revision, a white paper I wrote for the SQL Azure team, “NoSQL and the Windows Azure Platform”, has been published by Microsoft. If you go to http://www.microsoft.com/wi... and do a find within the page for “NoSQL” you’ll see a link for it. If you’d rather download the PDF directly, you can do so by clicking here. The 25-page (not including cover and TOC) paper provides an introduction to NoSQL database technology, and its major subcategories, ...
This has been kind of a crappy week for me. Kids are all puking like crazy so I’m up most nights taking care of them. Fun times being a day! (I have 4 kids in case you didn’t know!). And while my kids have been puking, the community has been busy puking too. Puking up a ton of awesomeness! Yeah…probably not the best analogy but I’m tired. I did want to take the time to point out one thing that resonated loudly with me this week. You’ll see some interviews with Kris Steele by Steven Hurdle. In that ...

I’ve had this conversation a ton of times with my SharePoint buddies what makes a good recruiter? I have blogged about absolutely abhorring recruiters in general. I don’t hate all recruiters. You can’t use the qualifier “All” for anything, like one of my math teacher’s Mrs. Wildermuth taught me in 10th grade. So which recruiters do I love and which ones do I absolutely never want to interact with again in my life? So here are ramblings on my thoughts to this subject. First off don’t start off asking ...

I've been hiking with the Cleveland Hiking Club. And a lot. But, over the past month, I hiked a 15-miles, 20-miles and last Sunday, 26-miles (a Marathon!), As I hiked on these long miles, I had a lot of time to think and to think about my relationship with God. I've been asking God for quite some time to help me develop a deeper relationship with Him. Attending classes are good. Attending service is good. Being in communion with the community is good. But, I was looking for something deeper. Well, ...
If you’re a “community influencer” type in Atlanta, or you’re coming into town for Tech Ed 2011, be sure to hit up the INETA Community Leadership Summit on Sunday. I’ve been to several of these and it’s definitely time well spent if you have an interest in the greater developer community along with user groups, speakers, organizers and what makes them tick… and how to be “better” at it. The link to register is: http://inetateched2011.even... Make sure you grab the right ticket though. If ...
MIX 11 happened this past week and I’m still trying to find and catch up on all the announcements changes that came from that. It looks like we can now use XNA on the web via Silverlight (and am I reading that we can do 3d?). We can now use Silverlight in our XNA projects with Windows Phone 7 (yay for having an easy way to make UI’s in XNA now!). And I’m still searching around to see if there were any other big news. The Silverlight + XNA news is pretty big because that opens up a lot of new game ...

It appears that my work in the community and the nominations received from others has secured my status as an MVP for a second year. Thank you all for the award and thank you everyone (including Microsoft) for valuing my contributions to the community. I noticed last year I did quite a bit of travelling and talks. I’m going to need to work hard to keep that up this year. I’m also hoping to gear up for the v1 release of RoundhousE and DropkicK as well as something new I’ve been working on known as ...
At long last, Microsoft stuck to its promise and unveiled Silverlight 5 beta at MIX 11. Though unable to attend the event, I kept track of happenings through Twitter. Just a few mins back, the announcements came pouring and immediately, there was a flurry of activity in the community. People posted links to their blogs detailing features of Silverlight 5. I was astounded at the speed at which these folks acted. Wow. Anyway, here’s a roundup of all the activity since the announcement: Tim Heuer’s ...

A long overdue post. For months I haven’t posted to this blog and I feel terribly guilty at having neglected it. So here goes a brand new post. A coupe of weeks ago, Silverlightshow.net concluded their annual Ecocontest and announced a bunch of deserving winners who win passes to attend Mix 11 at Las Vegas. About the contest: Silverlightshow conducts an annual Ecocontest promoting eco-awareness. This year’s theme was Deforestation. Participants were asked to develop a Silverlight based application ...
This post is from a very good friend of mine, Billy Hollis. He’s got some interesting food for thought and I think you’ll enjoy his perspective! For over 15 years now, our industry has been struggling with a crucial tradeoff. We can get broad reach via standards, or we can get the best possible user experience with applications that take advantage of particular devices or platforms. It's a stereotype that people in software development tend to be code and technology centric and not user centric. ...
What a crazy week! Big game releases from the XNA Community, podcasts, reviews, interviews, new educational content being posted and all sorts of upcoming titles that I’m excited about. If there was ever a week that I missed stuff, this was the week. Seemed like every time I glanced at twitter or checked my RSS feeds there was some interesting and new XNA thing going on. No need for me to try and convince you, just like at the size of this weeks XNA Notes! Time Critical XNA News: Making Windows Phone ...
Hi All, just wanted to point out a teensy weensy but maybe very useful tip. It might be outdated information if you are using SharePoint 2010, but if you are using SharePoint 2007 then you might find this useful. I am sure all of you working with SharePoint has come across Heather Solomon through her blog, it being a really wonderful resource for skinning SharePoint. Heather also has provided a ton of help to the SharePoint community by sharing the minimal masterpages for WSS and MOSS. What I wanted ...

Fellow Techies of the world.. Welcome! In this obligatory first post I want to just tell you a little about myself and what I intend to do with this blog. I’ve worked in fits and starts on a tech blog before so I’m happy to be a part of the GeeksWithBlogs community now and make it my new home. Let’s begin at the beginning… Sometime back in 1995 my dad (who has worked with computer pretty much since there have been computers) brought home 2 books. Visual Basic 4 and Visual C++ 4 (For Beginners). I ...
This is my first post, so i am not sure how to proceed. I was very anxious to post something relevant to IT community but due to work loads or a thought that everything is available on net here or there keeping me away to post. But there is always a first time . Recently when i was working on a change requirement i had to change a table data in a manner in which field data toggles. Essentially it was a production entity table like parts in a batch manufacturing. So the table contained a field [Status] ...
There has been quite a furore in the last couple of weeks about a blog article published by David Barrett entitled "CEO Friday: Why we don’t hire .NET programmers". You can find it at http://blog.expensify.com/2... Along with about half the global development community, I tried to post a response, but comments were already closed. I had all but forgotten the article until, a few minutes ago, up popped a daily .NET newsletter with a headline linking ...
New York City was always this fantasy far away that I couldn't touch. I'm not sure it's really New York, but a place that was outside of St. Louis. A place that was outside this whole midwestern bubble I lived in when I was a kid. All I had was school and baseball, because well everything else wasn't so great when I until after I turned 18. When I was 18 I had this really great summer and it felt like everything was changing. It was the beginning of my life. I had no idea what that summer meant, ...
Today is April Fool's day...and apparently I fooled quite a few people with my post earlier today! Sorry if you were outraged, concerned (or maybe you were happy and elated?) but I am not losing my MVP status. I'm still an XNA MVP and hope to remain one for as long as XNA is around. I really love the technology and this community! Something that was NOT an April fool's joke however, there are now two new XNA MVPs (well only two knew that I'm aware of, if there's more, please make yourself known!). ...
We have just released a free extension for Visual Studio which adds a Builds Explorer with folders to the Team Explorer. The extension can be downloaded from Visual Studio Gallery or just search for Inmeta in Tools/Extension Manager. The documentation and issue tracking can be found at the codeplex site for the project http://tfsbuildfolders.code... and source code is available there. The Build explorer is based on using a convention of separators in the build definition names. See Brian Harry’s ...
[What you see below was an April Fool's Joke! I am still an MVP and was already re-awarded for the year back in January! I'm still laughing at how many people this fooled (although I did feel a little bad when I saw all the nice comments being made) It was kind of like faking your own death, I got to read a so many wonderful things about me and it was really quite touching just how many people reached out to me or got really upset or angry about this news. Thanks for the concern, but I am still an ...

In "Writing Windows Shell Extension with .NET Framework 4 (C#, VB.NET) - Part 1: Context Menu Handler", we introduced how to write Windows shell context menu handler using .NET 4: Lots of developers have this follow-up question: how can I add bitmap icons to those context menu items? This week was a busy one for the XNA Community and one that had a series of ups and downs. You might have noticed by now (or maybe you haven’t and I shouldn’t be pointing this out..) that I tend to only point out the ups. That’s very much on purpose and something I thought long and hard about before I started doing XNA Notes. It’s too easy to let the bad stuff spread like a virus and seem overwhelming (something to do with human nature and there’s probably a science and psychology behind it). When ...

For the last three years the Chicago Information Technology Architects Group has been the only community in the Chicago area for Software Architects, Enterprise Architects, Infrastructure Architects and Database Architects. Suddenly this is changing. The first change was a special interest group created by member of the Chicago .NET Users Group (CNUG). This has just started in the last couple of months. Now it was just announced that IASA is finally launching a Chicago chapter. This is something ...
I have always been interested in learning which features of my application users are using as well as if they are using it. I have done this with other applications by using my own “home-grown” version of web services, etc. Since I have been working a lot with Windows Phone 7 lately, I decided to learn how to do this and share with the community. Before you get started you will be pleased to know that you won’t have to spend any money *at least until 2012* to do this with your existing phone apps. ...

If you've been a loyal Reflector user, you've probably been exposed to the debacle surrounding RedGate's decision to no longer offer a free version. Since then, the race has begun for a replacement with a provider that would stand by their promises to the community. Mono has an ongoing free alternative, which has been available for a long time. However, other vendors are stepping up to the plate, with their own offerings. If Not Reflector, Then What? One of these vendors is Telerik. In their recent ...
