More “right time” questions: What is the right time to: - start any business? - take some risks? - realize your dreams? - dream, plan and act? - experiment and learn? Answer to all is “NOW”. There could be many such questions but no one can time the market, luck or dream. Every time I think something different than common: I hardly see people getting aligned or relating to those ideas/thoughts. I see them realizing it only after it is done or proved! This has happened with me in both personal and ...

Since the new issue of Code Magazine is hitting the stands any day now, I'll go ahead and post my article on Give Camps from the previous issue. GiveCamps Chris Williams This month I’m going to take a brief departure and talk about the growing phenomenon in the developer community known as GiveCamps. If you’ve never heard of these, keep reading (you better keep reading either way, bub). What Exactly Is a GiveCamp? GiveCamps are the brainchild of Microsoft Central Region Developer Evangelist Chris ...
I’ve been answering this question over and over about TextBox validation on the MSDN forums. I wanted to post it on my blog as a point of reference for future users. Basically the question is, I have a textbox and want to restrict numeric values or alpha only. I’ve seen so many version of this involving Regular Expressions to some crazy alpha/numeric array searches. Below is the method that I am using in several production apps as well as community apps. I hope this helps the people on the MSDN forums ...
I attended my first CodeStock this year and in short it was awesome. Like 100 billion hot dogs awesome. The travel there was crazy to say the least, but I met lots of new people, had a session go well and recorded 3 podcasts. So that is the short version. If you are on twitter and either follow me or followed the #codestock hash tag, you probably saw my airline craziness in Philly. It all started on Monday. We had a client deliverable on Wednesday morning and due to some things that happened I only ...

In this Issue: Mike Taulty, Joshua Holt, and Timmy Kokke. Shoutout: Jesse Liberty has a post up that should be required reading for anyone blogging or thinking about starting one: Creating A Silverlight Blog That Doesn’t Suck From SilverlightCream.com: Silverlight and WCF RIA Services (4 – RIA Services Libraries) The 4th part of Mike Taulty's RIA Services series is a nice tutorial on the RIA Service Class Library... what it is, how to build one and how to use it. Today I had a quick bash at problem 6. To me this has been the easiest of the problems so far. It is the first time though that I got to use the Seq.Fold function which was good to get exposure to. I am not to happy with my code though, I can’t explain it, but it just seems a bit messy… Anyhow, I look forward to feedback from everyone in the F# community on their approaches. Problem The sum of the squares of the first ten natural numbers is, 12 + 22 + ... + 102 = 385 The square of the sum of the ...
This past Monday, June 21st, The New York City Council Committee on Technology in Government held a hearing on its proposed legislation, known as Introduction 029-2010, that would require all City agencies to publish their data online, in “raw” form. The data would be available to private citizens who wished to analyze it, hobbyist developers who wished to work with it, and commercial entities looking to utilize it internally or create products that use and add value to it. Such initiatives have ...
The BizTalk Scheduled Task Adapter is an in process receive adapter that can be configured to execute a prescribed task on a daily, weekly or monthly schedule. "The adapter is configured entirely within Biztalk, all config is stored within the SSODB and can be exported and imported via binding files. The schedule capabilities are similar to those available with the Windows Scheduled Task Service." Although defined on codeplex as an adapter for BizTalk Server 2004 or BizTalk Server 2006, the Scheduled ...
I am using this blog to assist other beginner/intermediate developers with anything that deals with developing software. I also use this blog to help myself remember things or ideas. This is the first blog post on several ideas that I have using WPF and would like to share with the community. Some of my ideas may be crazy or far-fetched but I would like to think of myself as a little strange anyways. This post is about using the FlowDocument to create an “About” box. First, an overview straight from ...
A new community has popped onto my radar, created and delivered by James Burns, a top chap I have known for many, many years. The aim of the community is to foster dialogue between Architects and Senior Developers across Financial Services in the UK. The format of the first event is a mix of short high level presentations on hot topics that we hear across Financial Services and networking with a few drinks and canapés. It is free to attend for all Architects and Senior Developers. If you wish to ...
Technorati Tags: .NET,Kansas City Thanks to the KC development community for a great free event. The Johnson County Community College provided very nice facilities. I’m the sort of guy who would willingly drive 4+ hours each way for a free XL (or “developer medium”, as Richard Campbell calls it) T-shirt, but got a lot more than that out of the event. Here's a recap of the sessions I attended: Why Kanban? speaker: Troy Tuttle Troy is a “pragmatic agilist” at AdventureTech (not AdventureWorks – I was ...

This is (almost) a straight copy and paste but represents an important announcement worthy of a little more “exposure” :-) Starting August 1, 2010, we will release a new SQL Azure Development Accelerator Core promotional offer. This new offer will give you the flexibility to purchase commitment quantities of SQL Azure Business Edition databases independent of other Windows Azure platform services at a deeply discounted monthly price. The offer is valid only for a six month term. You may purchase ...
Like many others signed up to the Windows Azure Platform, I received an email overnight detailing the upcoming database size changes for SQL Azure. I know from our work with early adopters over the last 12 months that the 1GB and 10GB limits were sometimes seen as blockers, especially when migrating existing application to SQL Azure. On June 28th 2010, we will be increasing the size limits: SQL Azure Web Edition database from 1 GB to 5 GB SQL Azure Business Edition database will go from 10 GB to ...
It has been another fantastic year for TechEd North America. I always love my time here. First, I have to give a huge thank you to Ineta for giving me the opportunity to work the Ineta booth and BOF’s (birds of a feather). I can not even begin to list how many fantastic leaders in the .Net space and Developers from all over I have met through Ineta at this event. It has been truly amazing and great fun!! New Orlean’s has been awesome. The night life is hoppin’. In addition to enjoying a few (too ...
This list is in no particular order. Just the 10 best programming podcast that I have found so far. Stack Overflow Podcast - Jeff Atwood (of codinghorror.com) and Joel Spolsky (of joelonsoftware.com) discuss the development of their new programming community, StackOverflow.com. [This Podcast hasn’t been updated in a while, but its always great to hear more from Jeff Atwood] Hanselminutes - Hanselminutes is a weekly audio talk show with noted web developer and technologist Scott Hanselman and hosted ...
Another event advert alert :-) But this one comes with a cautious warning. I spoke at TechEd Europe last year. I found TechEd to be a huge, extremely well run conference filled with great speakers and passionate attendees in a top notch venue and fascinating city. As an “IT Pro” I think it is the premiere conference for Microsoft technologies in Europe. However, IMHO and those of others I trust, I didn’t think it hit the mark for developers in 2009. There was a fairly obvious reason – the PDC was ...
First, a link to the blog I can no longer edit because Office Live blew away my digital identity and so I can no longer log into it (the source of a loooong blog about protecting your digital identity sometime when I have more time and after it has played out to the end) so you can check out my previous blog life. http://greentug.spaces.live... The following are the communities I participate in: Green & Sustainability. I run a virtual user group on Green and Sustainability as it relates to ...
The mouse is like computer training wheels. It makes using a computer easier – but it slows you down. Like many of my peers I am making a effort to learn keyboard shortcuts to reduce my dependence on the mouse. So I have started accumulating browser bookmarks to websites listing keyboard shortcuts for vim and resharper etc. Based on the assumption that I am not the only person who finds this untenable I am considering building the ultimate keyboard shortcut reference site. This is an opportunity ...
I am scheduled to give a presentation at the Miramar .Net User Group on July 13, 2010 about MVC and the new features in MVC2. This will be similar to the talk I gave a few days ago at the LI .Net User Group in NY, yet will have more advanced content since the Miramar .Net User Group already had an introduction to MVC in a previous meeting. Here is the topic and speaker bio: What's New in MVC2 We will start by briefly reviewing the basics of the Microsoft MVC Framework. Next, we will look at the new ...
I've got TortoiseBazaar installed on my Windows laptop, and I was trying to branch a repository hosted on my VPS to another directory on my VPS, and I got this lovely error: bzr: ERROR: Unknown branch format: 'Bazaar Branch Format 7 (needs bzr 1.6) That lead me to this mailing-list archive: http://osdir.com/ml/bazaar/... Then I tried following the instructions here to add the Launchpad PPA to /etc/apt/sources.list, but they forgot to mention that you need to do this: sudo apt-key ...
I've been working on a new podcast for the game development community called the Deep Fried Devcast. Currently we are in pre-production but should have some episodes up in the near future. Here is a quick FAQ about the show: What is the Deep Fried Devcast? The Deep Fried Devcast is a bi-weekly show all about game development. The show will feature developer interviews, a focus on the technical aspects of game development (programming, technical design), the business of team game development (time ...
FredNUG is pleased to announce our June speaker will be Pete Brown. Pete was one of FredNUG’s first speakers when the group started and we’re very happy to have him visiting us again to present on Silverlight! On June 15th @ 6:30 PM, we’ll start with a Visual Studio 2010 Launch with pizza, swag and a presentation about what makes Visual Studio 2010 great. Then, starting at 7 PM, Pete Brown will present “What’s New in Silverlight 4.” It looks like an evening filled with newness! The scheduled agenda ...
The last few months have been pretty crazy. Just before the MVP summit in February I was approached about changing to a different project with my (then current) employer, and right after the summit I was approached by another company. Eventually I went with the new company and a new role in the Information Assurance field. More to come on that as things progress. All that being said I've not been as active in the .NET community as I once was and I miss it - so I'm looking to dive back in especially ...
Windows Embedded Compact 7 Public Community Technology Preview (Public CTP) is finally available for downloading: You need a Windows Live ID to log in and download the Public CTP Go to the Connection Directory, find Windows Embedded Compact 7 Public CTP and click on (apply) Download the Public CTP from the Compact 7 Public CTP program page In the next blog entries I'll try to address some of the new features of the new version of my favourite OS ...
As previsouly noted in my post on Schema Generation using the Community ODBC Adapter, I ran into a problem when trying to generate a schema to represent a MySQL stored procedure that had input parameters. After a bit of investigation and a few deadends I managed to figure out a way around this issue - detailed below are both the problem and solution in case you ever run into this yourself. The Problem Imagine a stored procedure that is coded as follows in MySQL: StuTest(in DStr varchar(80)) BEGIN ...
I have previously talked about the installation of the Community ODBC adapter and also using the ODBC adapter to generate schemas and laterly the creation of a receive port using the ODBC Adapter. But what about creating a send port? Select to add a new Send Port, select the ODBC Adapter and click configure. Clicking Connection string will open the DataSource window. Choose one of your system datasources and press OK. This will now update the Transport properties. Select okay. All that remains is ...
I have previously talked about the installation of the Community ODBC adapter and also using the ODBC adapter to generate schemas. But what about creating a receive location? An ODBC receive location will periodically poll the configured database using the stored procedure or SQL string defined in your request schema. If you need to, begin by adding a new receive port to your BizTalk configuration. Create a new receive location and select to use the ODBC adapter and click Address. You will now be ...
Having previously detailed the installation of the Community ODBC Adapter for BizTalk 2009, the next thing I will be looking at is the generation of schemas using this ODBC adapter. Within your BizTalk 2009 project, right click the project and select Add Generated Items. In the resultant window choose Add Adapter Metadata and click Add to open the Add Adapter Wizard. Check that the BizTalk Server and Database names are correct, select the ODBC adapter and click next. You must now set the connection ...
I have previsouly detailed the installation of MySQL, the configuration of MySQL and the installation of the ODBC Data Connector for MySQL. The reason I needed to install and configure these servers was to provide a test environment for a BizTalk Server 2009 solution I am working on where BizTalk will be querying and populating a MySQL database. To do this I then needed to install and add the Community ODBC adapter from Two Connect: "The Community BizTalk Adapter for ODBC is based on the code that ...
I previously mentioned I was working on a community authored eBook for the Windows Azure Platform. Well, today I assembled the 20 articles that made it through to the end of the review process into a single eBook – and it looks (and reads) great. Still a lot more to do (and stuff in the way of me doing it) but as a teaser, here is the (very draft) table of contents: ...
On Monday at Tech?Ed 2010 we announced new stuff (I like new stuff) that “showcases our continued commitment to deliver value, flexibility and control of data through data cloud services to our customers”. Ok, that does sound like marketing speak (and it is) but the good news is there is some meat behind it. We have some decent new features coming and we also have some clarity on when we will be able to get our hands on those features. SQL Azure Business Edition Extends to 50 GB – June 28th SQL Azure ...
Having previsouly installed and then configured MySQL, you may now need to install the ODBC Data Connector driver in order to connect to your MySQL database. Following the Splash screen the first thing to choose is the Setup Type for your installation. As usual I chose custom so that I could see the components that were actually being installed. In this case the custom set up screen allows you to choose to install the driver and the documentation. Finally you can complete the installation Assuming ...
As of June 1, 2010 many of the Windows CE newsgroups have been shut down by Microsoft, and the rest will be shut down by October 1, 2010. This is part of an overall Microsoft strategy to move community from newsgroups to web based forums. The newsgroups have been indexed by Google, so the existing content can and should be searched for answers using http://groups.google.com/ad... Microsoft has replaced the newsgroups with http://social.msdn.microsof... ...
I recently was given an assignment to create a UX where a user could use the up and down arrow keys, as well as the tab and enter keys to move through a Silverlight datagrid that is going be used as part of a high throughput data entry UI. And to be honest, I’ve not trapped key codes since I coded JavaScript a few years ago. Although the frameworks I’m using made it easy, it wasn’t without some trial and error. The other thing that bothered me was that the customer tossed this into the use case as ...
After years of one night community and volunteering tasks; and even running cool events like ]inbetween[ weekend, I finally get to go to the actual event! And this time it’s not in Orlando – it’s in New Orleans - which is also exciting! I will be attending many Windows Phone 7 sessions. And will hover over the Windows Phone booths. I am also extremely excited about this short exchange I had on twitter with the brand new Windows Phone Partner Community account: @wppartner #WindwosPhone 7 Enterprise ...
I was thrilled and honored to be a guest on the Wordpress Podcast on WebMasterRadio.fm. This podcast is hosted by my friend Joost de Valk and Frederick Townes. You can read about the podcast, PHP on IIS, PHP on Azure and much more on my blog at Wordpress Podcast… ...
Garage Sale Code The term “Garage Sale Code” came from a post by Scott Hanselman. He defines Garage Sale Code as: Complete – It’s a whole library or application. Concise – It does one discrete thing. Clear – It’ll work when you get it. Cheap – It’s free or < 25 cents. (Quite Possibly) Crap – As with a Garage Sale, you’ll never know until you get it home if it’s useless. With the code I’ve posted here, you’ll get all 5 of those things (with an emphasis on crap). All of the projects listed below ...
Gizmox is announcing a ListView Challenge where developers can participate by creating and submitting their own implementations of the new extended ListView. "its quite amazing what you can do with it. It opens a lot of new ways to present data in a better and more userfriendly way," says one of the VWG community members who built a three level hierarchal ListView. Watch the hierarchal ListView demo by Visualizer Those ListView implementations will be reviewed and rated and the winner will win a ...
This will be the official name of the new release of Windows CE. Windows Embedded Compact 7 is available as a public CTP and it already supports a wide range of CPUs and both the device emulator and VirtualPC emulated environments. So I’ll have to learn a new (and longer) name for my favorite OS… but I (and all my two readers!) will be able to test it as soon as the download from connect web site completes (I'm sorry for my readers, but you'll have to download it by yourselves). Here’s a link for ...
The opinions mentioned herein are solely mine and do not reflect those of my employer Wanted to post this for a long time but couldn’t. I have been an ASP.NET Developer for quite sometime and have worked with version 1.1, 2.0, 3.5 as well as the latest 4.0. With ASP.NET 2.0 and Visual Studio 2005, came the era of AJAX and rich UI style web applications. So, ASP.NET AJAX (codenamed “ATLAS”) was released almost an year later. This was called as ASP.NET 2.0 AJAX Extensions. This release was supported ...
Wow, just realized it's my 5 year anniverary on GeeksWithBlogs. Hard to believe so much time has passed. I paged back through some of my early posts, curious what sort of things about which I used to post. It's also interesting to see how my focus has changed and what really hasn't. I was also reminded that Chris Williams and I have been friends for that long. I don't blog nearly as often now as I used to do, but I still really like the GWB community, and I am honoured to be allowed to continue to ...
Event On June 7th Expression Studio 4 will be launched at the Internet Week in New York. Are you a UK based developer who has been put off from trying out the Windows Azure Platform? Were you concerned that you needed to hand over credit card details even to use the introductory offer? Then we might have just what you need. 7 Days of access to the Windows Azure Platform – for FREE (expires June 6th 2010) If you are accepted, you will be given a Windows Azure Platfom subscription that will enable ...

Unfortunately HTMLEditor component of AJAX Control Toolkit is not compatible with the UpdatePanel. The problem is when we use accents with the Mozilla Firefox browser and HTMLEditor is inside an UpdatePanel. Letters that contain accents are left with an unknown character (so is stored in the database or even returned a PostBack). Can be tested using Mozilla Firefox on the site of the ASP.NET AJAX Control Toolkit. Write a word with accents and go to "Submit Content": http://www.asp.net/AJAX/Aja... ...
Our April meeting was presented by Wilson Kutegeka on the topic of Building the Data Access a layer. In his presentation he showed a tool which he has developed to generate the entities, stores procedures that would be used to reduce having to retype the same boilerplate code for each entity. He uses visual basic samples to demonstrate access to the data from the database and inherits his classes from an abstract class which contains common properties including connection strings, save and delete ...
