Buck Hodges just announced two Visual Studio Team System discussions, scheduled for the afternoon and evening of December 5th (http://blogs.msdn.com/buck... I don't know how in-depth the discussions will be, since the intent is to cover everything from Team Foundation Server to the various editions of Visual Studio to new functionalities such as Continuous Integration support - but it is a chance to interact with the key people ...
Well, most of the web developers today develop Enterprise Web Applications. While the challenge lies on different parameters like designing the different layers, transferring data between the different layers etc., let us examine how Visual Studio 2005 and ASP.NET 2.0 help you create Enterprise Web Applications quite easily. Designing your Data Layer The first step in designing your application would obviously be designing your database and I would leave that part entirely at your discretion. Once ...

Hey all, it's official, VS and TFS 2008 are available today for download, there are so many new things it's hard to do the product justice in a simple blog. I've had the pleasure of testing and giving Microsoft a lot of feedback on this and future release of VSTS and I'm happy to say they listen to our feedback. Feel free to send me your comments I'll make sure they are aware of them. Jeff as a great post on all the new feature available Visual Studio Team System 2008 ships! so go have a look. Brian ...

Richard Hundhausen shot me this link to a great list of Microsoft Team System Widgets

Today marks the 3rd Saturday in a row I've gotten up before the crack of dawn to head out for a Code Camp :) I started on October 6th - driving up to Richmond for Richmond Code Camp 4. Last weekend I didn't have a long drive, but since I was helping to organize and set up SC Code Camp 3.0 I showed up by 6AM. This morning I got on the road by 5AM so I could make it to Charlotte Code camp. I'm scheduled to give a presentation on Code Analysis using Visual Studio Team System later this morning and I'm ...
I'm really happy to announce that last week our good friend Bartosz Pampuch received the MVP award in Visual Developer - Team System category. I think this is a well deserved nomination. I've met Bartek few years ago at one of our first .NET user group meetings (KGD). From the outset he was a very active member and throughout the years delivered many outstanding presentations. Bartek is currently leading the RND team for one of the largest software houses in Poland, where he researches new technologies ...
I just got a nice letter from Microsoft letting me know I got awarded as MVP for the 3rd year in a row. I feel really good about last year and all the stuff I did for the community. I'll try to do as much this year again. I love meeting new people and helping them network or solve their problem (If I can ;-)). Looking forward to talking (virtually) to some of you tomorrow in the Webcast, this autumn at the code camp and devteach and throughout next year. Thanks Microsoft for the 3rd vote of confidence. ...
Some time ago I posted my Unit Testing ASP.NET Applications notes. This post is to put togeter a few links that I found useful about general Unit testing frameworks. MbUnit vs. NUnit Vs. Team System Unit Testing - Choosing a unit test framework NUnit vs Team System Unit Test In our solutions we are using both NUnit and VSTS Unit testing. I like VSTS for the ability to generate test stubs code. But our build server has only VS Professional installed, that doesn't allow to include VSTS projects to ...

Microsoft released Microsoft Visual Studio Team System Web Access yesterday as a Power Tool.  The model is the same as the TeamPlain release, free to licensed TFS users.  It's supported, but not an official product.

Have fun!

The downloads available are separate installation disc image for each of VS 2008 editions (including Express), and a couple of more disc images for MSDN library and TFS; also, included separated VPC image for VSTS and TFS. So I'm still working hard on the build series, I'm up to a 26 page document right now just showing how to create a build ;-). *Moved to: Loosing the battle, but the war goes onWell in my current war to get my company to use TFS, I am loosing the battle for Visual Studio Team System adoption. I have fought many battles, against Jira, Confluence and Subversion, but they are currently wining. I cant seam to get the Architecture & Strategy guys to get behind the project. They are sitting on the sidelines encouraging me, but with no active participation. Time and again I am running up against the problem that no one will ...
Steven Martin, CSD Product Manager at Microsoft in his blog states: Today at the Worldwide Partner Conference in Denver, we announced that BizTalk Server 2006 R2, is set to launch in September of this year! On the anniversary of our nation's independence I call upon my U.S. citizens to throw off the shackles of our British oppressors and pronounce the word "agile" like true Americans: The pretentious un-American "goofus" pronunciation: aj-ahyl The right-thinking American "gallant" pronunciation: aj-uhl Listening to the .NET Rocks Team System panel discussion from Tech Ed last week, I was dismayed to hear that only one of the six panelists pronounced "agile" like an American. I'm not sure which one it ...

While installing the eScrum template I ran into some pretty cryptic issues with the project management site working. This is the site that installer ask you what virtual directory you would like to associated it with. The app was returning me the error: Failed to retrieve WorkItemStore Service on server: SERVERNAME or there is no project found with name: PROJECT NAME. The unfortunate problem with this issue is that it has nothing to do with the actual project not being found on the server, but what ...
I have to say I am excited to see Microsoft release a new process template named eScrum. After installing it I must say I am pretty happy thus far. Steve Loethen goes into more detail about what the template offers. One issue I have with these new Microsoft project that use other downloadable Microsoft project to build their solutions are the constant list of separate download and moving dll. Just push the version you used with the download. In eScrum's case, they have you download ASP.NET AJAX, ...
Vivek opened up for discussion Jamie Cansdale's current plight. Well, I've got some opinions because indirectly it impacts me. I'm very involved with various user groups in the Phoenix area, having coordinated two code camps. In our camps we strive first and foremost to incorporate the widest variety of technology possible. Perl, PHP, Ruby, and Linux are are always hot topics, right along side Atlas, WPF, and Sharepoint. Everything is equal. So when Microsoft's legal arm pulls these kinds of tricks ...
I will be a speaker at the Micrsoft "Enterprise & Development Summit 2007" in Luxembourg on June 12th. This is equivalent to the Belgian DevDays or the French TechDays. You can find the agenda and details here (in French). My session is about Team System. I will probably give a general overview and a few short demos since there haven't been many event on VSTS in Luxembourg before. This is my first (and hopefully not last) time as a speaker. It's been developed by the Visual Studio Team System Rangers in response to significant customer demand for a connector solution. Future versions of Team System will have native integration with Project Server, in the meantime ...

*Moved to: Team Server Event Handlers made easy...Will, not really... I work for a rather large organization and I wanted an easy way for power users of team system to deploy event handlers for the Team Foundation Server events. While the TFS team didn't put everything into the 1st real release of TFS, they certaintly are getting tools/powertoys/helpers/gui... out there to the community in real time. Driven by the initial need to ship, the TFS team clearly had to make some feature choices in order to meet the late 2005 schedule on the 1st release. That's just the dynamics of shipping product. However, what they've done is put out, on a psuedo supported mode (non PSS or is it CSS now?), tools that make the TFS experience ...
There are 14 core tracks and 2 virtual tracks at Tech·Ed this year, which will cover more than 1,000 sessions. In case you're wondering, a virtual track is a collection of sessions or labs that share a common theme but span several tracks. Microsoft has revised the technical tracks slightly since my original post, so I have updated my summary. Microsoft has acquired DevBiz Business Solutions and their product TeamPlain Web Access for Team System. TeamPlain is a web front end for VSTS that enables users to access the majority of TFS functionality from within a Web browser. TeamPlain will become Microsoft Visual Studio Team System Web Access. Eventually this will be released as a VSTS Power Tool, and ...
This is a great news, TeamPlain are the leader in Team System web access as a group (MVPs and influencer) we told Microsoft "if you are going to provide web access to TFS, make it better then TeamPlain of buy them", looks like the listen to us ;-). What is also great about this news is they will be able to spend more cycle on new features in TFS and just gain a whole web access platform which is good for everyone. Nice move Microsoft read all about it here on Brian's blog. Cheers, ET ...

I stumbled upon this today. It's from the Microsoft UK Developer Tools team. I've written an addin for IE to allow users to easily raise a complete bug report. When the user indicates that there is a problem on the page, the addin will create a new Team System Work Item and populate it with the following information: A screenshot attached to the work item. HTML source of the page and any frames and IFrames attached to the work item. Any style sheets referenced by the page attached to the work item ...
I was having breakfast with Josh Holmes at the Microsoft MVP Summit this morning and we were asked by one of the attendees about resources for doing effective code reviews. So this got me thinking about the things that have really worked for me in the past and I thought I’d pass them along. Tip #1: First and foremost, review code often. I’ve worked with many architects that do regular code reviews every one or two weeks. Think about how much code you yourself could write in one eight hour work day. ...

Jason Prickett has a post up on using PowerShell with the Team Build Object Model: This entry is based on Team Build's next version which is available in a CTP release right now, and will be in Beta very soon (don't ask, I don't know when). In the next version of Team Build, we have included an Object Model (OM) that wraps all the functionality of the Web Services. This makes writing your own apps that need build information, much easier. As I talk about how to use the methods and objects in the ...

So you have Visual Studio Team System, and you opened up Team Explorer, selected Source Control, found the project you want, double click it, and select the wrong place for the files to go (local folder). You want to fix this, but where? How? There's seemingly no logical place where you go and do this. The thing to remember with Visual Studio Team System is that there is this concept of WorkSpace, which is not intuitive or really clearly defined in my humble opinion, thus it tends to be ignored by ...
