An update to the Windows Desktop Search has just been released and I am happy to say it has a lot of welcome fixes. Dubbed version 3.0 beta 2 it is available here. Since beta testing Office 2007, I was forced to install an interim update to Windows Desktop Search so it would work with Office and also index Outlook and OneNote 2007. One of the undesirable side-effects was that it removed the GUI interface from the desktop or task bar that allowed me to search for files. I could only do it from within ...
• What is SharePoint? Portal Collaboration Software. • What is the difference between SharePoint Portal Server and Windows SharePoint Services? SharePoint Portal Server is the global portal offering features like global navigation and searching. Windows SharePoint Services is more content management based with document libraries and lists. You apply information to certain areas within your portal from Windows SharePoint Services or directly to portal areas. • What is a web part ...
I’ve had the highs and lows of living with Vista for a week now… Being of the developer breed and allows having an Administer Account I thought for this exercise I’d go with the flow and have a normal account with access to my Administration functions bubbling under…. Most of the time this is great but then there are those times you want to scream. Today has been one of those and its not 8:00 am yet. As always my Outlook mail box is over quota – happens once a week. ...

The Facts OK, as everybody, I had to write my first Windows Live Writer post, like everybody else did, that's what you are reading right now! If you haven't checked it out already, Windows Live Writer is a blog authoring software from Microsoft, which has become a top topic in the blogsphere lately; it's released with an SDK which some people also had good experience with, used mainly for posting to Windows Live spaces, yet supports many other blogging engines including Movable Type, Blogger.com, ...
The Noble Eightfold Path (also known as the Middle Way) is, in the Buddhist tradition, considered to be the way that leads to the end of suffering and is essentially a practical guide of mental rehabilitation and mind deconditioning. The eight elements of this path are divided into three basic categories: Wisdom, Ethical Conduct & Mental Discipline. Wisdom contains two elements: 1. Right Understanding (or Right View), which is an understanding of the 4 Noble Truths (knowledge of suffering, knowledge ...
I'm just going through a proof of concept at a client's site for an AG+AAC Implementation and I was looking at bringing the AG up to 4.2.2 as I heard there were a few critical patches, and interestingly enough the link to 4.2.2 from CTX108902 ends up pointing at a 4.2.3 Download?? BTW - Don't forget to remove your existing Admin Tool and then download and install from fresh after upgrading the CAG!(But you knew that didn't you? ;-) The 4.2.2 lists these Known Issues and Issues Fixed: Known Issue(s) ...

Notes on importing and exporting events between Outlook 2003 SP2 Calendar and Google Calendar. Exporting: You can export from Outlook to CSV. You can export from Google to iCal, XML, or HTML formats. Importing: You can import to Outlook from iCal format, but there are issues here:- If you use file->Import, no problem.- If you double-click the file, open it from IE, or drop the file onto Outlook, only the first item in the calendar will be imported. You can import to Google from CSV or iCal format. ...
I just stumbled upon Microsoft's feedback program for the Office 2007 beta called “Send a smile”. It's kind of a campy little tool, but it does make it amazingly easy to send feedback relating to the Office 2007 beta. The program is a small download. It takes up minimal resources and I've already found it useful to submit some feedback on annoying things as well as one praise about Office 2007. It would be interesting to know how Microsoft intends to use this data, because I imagine they'll ...

Procedure for recovering your Exchange Calendar and Contacts We recently performed a migration from Microsoft Exchange 5.5 to Microsoft Exchange 2003. It was long coming. I’m very excited to start leveraging some of the great feature of the upgrade. But there were some issues… The main problem was that when I changed my Outlook to point to the new Exchange server, the Contacts and Calendar items that I had imported from my personal .PST weren’t there. Not Good. Fortunately I had ...
Now this is an interesting little concept: Pando Networks has developed an Outlook Plug-In that will initiate an P2P file transfer from an email message if the attachment exceeds the specified limit allowed for attachments in the email.
Another Request for the Microsoft RSS Team:I have been digging the improved RSS feed reading within the IE 7 beta 3. It is a big improvement and really adds to the usability of the feature(s). However, one thing I would love to see is synchronization of the feed read\unread states between IE 7 and Outlook 2007. I love how it syncs the subscription list, but I hate having to manage the “read state” of my posts between the two applications. Especially since I heavily depend on the Outlook ...
Originally posted 3 August 2004 on my own site. Just as true now, if not more so. First, a bit of history. I've been using my CIOBriefings email account since 1998. However, in 2000 I spoke at a conference and placed my email address in my bio. This started a trickle of email that, four years later, has become a torrent of offers to buy drugs online, refinance my house, and enhance my anatomy. I get a lot of spam. I'm sure others get more, but I decided to track just how much spam I get. To that ...
At my company we have a very unique situation. We *WERE* " hubbed " in New Orleans, La till that nasty woman (Katrina) came and turned nola into a bath tub! So we had to move our servers and whatnot to Texas. Now this was all before I got here so don't yell at me if this was not the best solution for the problem. The problem was that the email servers were in texas and after the storm we still had two locations in LA and also had some execs out here to. When they would get big email from ...
I found a workaround for the AVG Antivirus issue, so I finally did it... and wow this Glass thing looks good. A few things of note. 1. Moving files is a major pain in the ass. I had backed up the “My Pictures” folder to my E: drive prior to the install and when it came time to move them all back into my new “My Pictures” folder, not only did it take FOR-EV-ERRRRR but It kept aborting the transfer over and over. I would select a few folders, Cut, Paste and it would transfer ...

Ok, time to start trying to revive this blog (yeah, how many times have you heard that before from bloggers). Seriously though, most of my blogging takes place over at Team System Rocks!, where I blog about Team System. At the advice of John Alexander (one of the co-founders of Geeks With Blogs), I'm going to start cross-posting information to this blog as well. We'll see how that goes. In other news, I have a new job. I now work for Notion Solutions, a software consulting firm specialing in Visual ...
“Huh!?” – that’s how I reacted when I first started a Word 2007 instance early this week. Now, as you can see (from the image below) the reaction was a combination of both surprise and… more surprise. Here are some surprises (All Pleasant ones) Where did my Menu’s go? That's Gone! Yadda! Zip! Choo! Gone! Just Like That! At least in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel. The Ribbon (which is like a really cool tabbed menu) is a pleasant experience to work with. Outlook ...
Technical Design Considerations for AG and AAC for 10,000 Users · The two following pages detail the caveats and considerations that need to be addressed when designing an AG and AAC Implementation for up to 10,000 Users · It should be kept in mind that these details were documented as of January 2006 and as such there have been some changes since then. · It was anticipated that Citrix would be making reasonable efforts to improve the number of *Tunnels* available to the AG, however ...
Vista, you sure are hard to love. I am trying my best, to love you unconditionally - I know you are a beta baby - but you make it very difficult. I have loaded Beta 2 a couple of times already - but when the going got tough (which was usually pretty early on) I quickly bailed and re-installed XP SP2. This time, in my TechEd 2006, drinking the Kool Aide, hangover stupor, I decided to install it again and try my best to live through the tough times. Here is where I am at: Office 2007 Beta 2 works amazingly ...
So last night as I'm booting up my laptop, I notice something odd. Apparantly my profile went corrupt. This of course had a ripple effect accross everything: Source Safe decided that it didn't want to play nice with Visual Studio anymore, all my settings were toast...had to re-connect and download all my Outlook stuff over again...etc. But whatever, made the best of it. Windows was using a user directory called TEMP to put all my “new” settings in, so whatever. To be safe though, I copied ...
I've had a website for years. I won't bother giving out the URL. You don't want to look at it right now because it's a mess. I started this as a place to store useful information such as links and code snippets, but never took it too far. My main use of this website is to get quick access into MSDN, since it's sometimes hard to drill through the menus there. Anyway... I decided to convert it to ASP.Net in an effort to learn more. I thought what better way to learn than to do. I needed and ASP.Net ...
Dang, I really really wanted to run Windows Vista on my new Lenovo (formally IBM) Thinkpad T60. I installed it just fine and got all the drivers working, but I need three things in order for this to be my work laptop. One, I need Microsoft Outlook and that worked just fine. I need our work-based messaging program to work. It didn't at first, but you can run this program using the Program Compatibility Wizard and assign it to run in a Windows XP SP2 context. Then the last program I need is Nortel's ...
Ok, I think I'm just going to blog on the cool InfoPath sessions from TechEd, since there will probably be tons of people talking about all the great SharePoint sessions. This session was great for us, since a lot of what we do involves form and workflow development. This session highlights the improvements for InfoPath 2007 with regard to workflows. Here are the highlights… InfoPath/WSS now has 2-way databinding, which means changes to form field values in WSS are saved in the form Workflows ...
Monday morning I attended a great session, InfoPath 2007: Office Integration and Collaboration Scenarios. Here are some of the highlights… New form import framework allows for importing of Microsoft Word forms into InfoPath, automatically converting Word fields to InfoPath fields Underlines à Textboxes Tables à Tables containing text boxes Multi-row tables à Repeating tables Improved Publishing Wizard Publish to Email (moved from File menu) Publish to install file (.js or .msi) ...
I want it all: Office 2007 supports all the technologies that users and developers have used to extend Office with custom code over the years. Maybe most importantly, Office 2007 can run macros embedded in existing Office documents and templates. Because Office 2007, like its predecessors, can run code, it is vulnerable to attacks by malicious code, such as macro viruses. However, Microsoft has taken some steps to tighten the suite's defences: Documents saved in Office 2007's default format cannot ...
Few days back someone made a comment “what the hell you know about VISTA” .. I didn't respond much ..but smiled... Slowly I tried to navigate and gather information about Vista if not knowledge about it.... somehow I felt Comfortable enough to write some lines about it... Here I go ... Outlook Add-in Setup Project This section describes how to enhance the Setup project that is created when you create an Outlook add-in project. You learn how to: Modify the Setup project so that it installs the prerequisites: the Visual Studio 2005 Tools for Office Runtime, (optionally) the Visual Studio 2005 Tools for Office Language Pack, and the Office primary interop assemblies. Add a step to the Setup project to grant security trust to the customization assembly. Add launch conditions to the ...
Apart from the fact that my bluetooth headset won't work with vista. I do have a few other things that keep my mind busy. I think it sucks I can't debug my asp.net apps when they are hosted on a UNC share. (this behavior was already present in XP) If you are like me then you rarely turn off your pc and have it do a lot of stuff for maintenance during the night. This would be nighthly spyware checking, nightly virus scanning and defragmenting on certain days of the month.Well if I leave my pc on during ...
I installed vista on my laptop yesterday. And the whole install is very hands-off and painless the price you pay is that it takes ages to complete. But it did install and upgrade my windows XP machine. After booting my new system twice I grabbed the phone and ordered 2GB of extra memory because before vista i was already pushing it so now it's just a necessity to get it. Vista works surprisingly well, it's a shame though that I still can't debug my asp.net applications when they are hosted on a network ...
Suppers Ready: Fun and games with Outlook 2007. Life wouldn’t be half as much fun without betaware!!! OK so installed it and started to use it but hit big problem – ‘Message could not be rendered’ – and blank message body. Sent of the error report but also decided to investigate…. First lets look at the Outlook Plugins that have carried across from 2003 Motorola sync - no issue AVG anti-virus – disabled – no change, wait new message OK old messages still blank? Send test message – renders OK Penny ...
I have some favorite features that I want to share. No, it's not the ribbon bar although it is pretty cool. The first is the addition of the Font Formatting menu to right click and select operation. Insert some text into Word 2007 and click and drag it to highlight. The closer you move the mouse to the top of the selection a Font Formatting tool will appear. I absolutely think this is an awesome addition. It also appears on right clicks in the current document. I attached a screenshot below to demonstrate. ...
The following demostrates how to retreive data from items within an Outlook folder (called "MySubFolderName" under the Inbox folder) using .NET: First add a reference to the Outlook COM object your project: In VS.NET right click on References and choose Add Reference. Select the COM tab Choose "Microsoft Outlook 11.0 Object Library" (this is for MS Office 2003 - I think 10.0 is for Office XP) and click Select. Click OK. Note that you can access any Outlook/Exchange object types, eg Appointments, ...
Here are the major improvements of WSS that I think will encourage people to move to the new office platform. Item-Level permissions - This vital missing feature of Sharepoint 2003 is implemented in MOSS. You can set permissions on a document or list item like you would do on folders. Recycle bin with multiple levels of permission - Deleted documents can be recovered more easily. Better handling of deleted and permanently deleted documents based on roles. e.g. site admins can recover documents that ...
I've been playing around with AJAX/Atlas lately and it's no surprise that you can pull off some pretty cool stuff with it. We've all seen the Virtual Earth and Outlook Web Access examples, but I'm interested in seeing “who else” is doing “what else” with it... specifically in terms of game development. Shoot me a line, send me some links (you can't post links in comments unfortunately, too much spam) and tell me about what you are doing with it. Some pretty cool ideas are ...
Well, according to the Microsoft Rep we are offically able to talk more about SharePoint 2007. So I guess the best way for me to relate what I am finding with the program that I am participating in would be to go through the general lessons that we are doing. Hands On Lab 1: This is pretty much a whats new in the SharePoint 2007. SharePoint 2007 is drastically changed from teh blocky old view that was 2003. It is cleaner and seems to be way more organized. Navigation has been cleaned up a lot since ...
A frecuently requested feature in the CAB community is a navigation control like Microsoft Outlook’s bar. Chris Holmes posted a few days ago a nice approach on how to achieve this using CAB: Read Use the Outlook Bar in your CAB applications ...
Well, the portal projected was benched and will resurface in the near future. Working on a suite of web apps that will be taking advantage of the Web 2.0 feature set. Along the way, Atlas has come around... with a go license. Our plan was to use it where possible... problems.. Unfinished - It is an impressive mix, but still being shaken out. Limited documentation - There is only one book to date published by O'Reily. Limited controls - The toolset provided in the April drop our nice but a work in ...
Well this is my 1st post on here so I hope I don't make too many mistakes( and yes i suck at spelling! ) :) So Palm finally put out the update for the Treo 700W. All in all it was a painless update, but it did take about 30mins ( as they said it would ) to fully complete the process. I don't know whether it had to do with the fact that the installer created like 100+ .tmp files that later it had to clean up or what. The software (version 1.10) provides the following updates: * Enterprise email support ...
StickOut is a desktop sticky note application with multi-user support and Outlook integration. It is a .NET Framework 2.0 Windows Forms application that uses .NET Remoting to communicate with other StickOut users and exchange sticky notes with them. It uses the new .NET Framework 2.0 IPC Channel for communicating between Microsoft Outlook and the StickOut process. The Outlook Add-in allows you to stick anything out to the desktop from Outlook including e-mails, notes, tasks, appointments, etc., as ...
This is kind of neat. An In/Out board integrated with Outlook, including the old pink “WHILE YOU WERE OUT” phone message pad. The 5–User Version is free, and it looks like the full version costs $259. Apparently the site doesn’t work well with Firefox, because when I click on the “Purchase” button, nothing happens. Had to try it out in IE to find out the price. I know, you can do a lot of this with an IM, but this appears to be more versatile: The Out'n About! ...
Visual WebGui is not just another AJAX framework but rather a different approach to web application development, specially designed to simplify building highly complex applications like Outlook Web Access (OWA). Visual WebGui makes it possible for developers to create applications that were previously developed only by the "big guys". While web development environments such as ASP.NET and JSP have made huge strides in creating a rich environment for developing web applications, they have always targeted ...
Awesome Tool! Highly recommend it ... http://rsspopper.blogspot.com/2004/10/home.html - this one allows adding RSS blog feeds to outlook so that you don't need an external aggregator... sweet!!
Visual WebGui basically leverages the WinForms object module to give you a new development experience developing rich internet applications like outlook web access. This object module by say covers 90% of what you need in order to create a outlook web access application. So how do we bridge the WinForms object module and web development ? through the concept of Gatways. Every WebGui component can declare it self as a WebGui gateway using the IGatewayControl interface, this allow controls to declare ...
I’ve been asked by a couple people now for a more complete review of my new PDA phone, and finally have a chance to post my thoughts. One of the reasons I waited is that I wanted to get the new updates installed, and have some time to check them out. Here’s a size comparison with my original Axim X5, the PPC-6700, and my old phone, the Samsung A500. So, the first thing you see is that the PPC-6700 is actually closer in size to my old phone than the Axim. That was one thing I always disliked ...
Well first of all for those of you who do not know what is Visual WebGui (shame on you)... Visual WebGui is a platform that exposes an SDK with the same API as WinForms and the design time capabilities only runtime product runs as a .NET web site through a unique communication layer and presentation layer. WebGui lets you develop outlook web access like applications with out any know how of web development. If you are a WinForms developer or a VB6 developer you should be able to start developing ...
So Microsoft has posted this article for those who want to deploy Push email but this is interesting that I've noticed this today almost immediately after going through an online discussion with some of the security team at my end that has seen us decide (read - me capitulate under overwhelming numbers??) to try using Nokia's Intellisync to achieve push email. OK, I'm gutted, and not just because I've spent so much spare time over the last 9 months or so trying to line this up but the reality of ...
