I wanted to write a blog post to document how I do some day-to-day things. It helps me to keep track of my work habits, refine them and perhaps help some others who are looking for some solutions. My current rig is a Apple MacBook Pro 13” unibody. It has the 250Gb drive with 4Gb memory. I am running the latest version of OS X Leopard. I am really enjoying the 13” form factor. It is a little smaller and lighter than the previous 15” unibody which, to me, just felt heavy. I also don't notice the lost ...
I've been working with the Exchange Web Service (EWS) Managed API wrapper to perform some Exchange tasks. My WEBDAV code wouldn't work with Exchange 2007. The EWS Managed API is much easier to work with then the direct Exchange web service calls. Thanks goodness. One task I have is to process inbound mail and flag it as complete. Took me hours to figure it out. First I have a search folder that has the stuff I want to process. This makes it easier to change the business rules in the outlook client ...
Summary In an Exchange 2003 SP2 environment, Outlook 2007 users are unable to send recurring calendar meeting notices (new, updated, or canceled) to external recipients outside of the Exchange Organization. This issue does NOT affect users using Outlook 2003 AND single calendar meeting notices. When they send a recurring calendar meeting notice to an external recipient, several things happen. One, the sender will receive the following NDR after the message expires. ---------------------------... ...
As a developer I’ve become used to multiple monitors to increase my productivity. Debugging applications is much easier when one monitor is running Visual Studio and a second monitor is displaying the application being debugged, or SQL Management Studio, or your Locals window. When I plugged my latest HP 6910p laptop into the docking station I was amazed to find that it supported dual external displays; both the DVI and analogue VGA ports can be active simultaneously. It’s a real advantage to get ...
Here we go, as a proper response to my own rant – Google Maps Mobile 3.0 for Windows Mobile, or what Live Search Mobile forgot to do, again. Windows Live Search Mobile client for WM6 has a feature called Collections, this feature let’s the user look up RSS content and map it. Hmmmm… Sarah Perez has found an article a while back on how to open up your collections in Live Search Mobile here: Make Your Live Maps Collections Mobile The tutorial linked is actually really nice: Live Maps Collections Mobile ...
I recently switched gigs at work and I’ve had re-install, well, all the tools and gadgets that I tend to use. I’ve also seen a bunch of blog posts lately about tools and plug-ins and I love learning what tools are being out there that I can use…SO, I’ve put together a real short and sweet list myself. This is by no means exhaustive! Tool Description Windows Live I switched over some time ago. This is a great tool for blog posts. I also love the code snippet plug-in. The next version of Groove is getting a new name; the successor to Microsoft Office Groove 2007 will be SharePoint Workspace 2010. Microsoft claims that this is a natural progression since Groove is to SharePoint like Outlook is to Exchange. SharePoint Workspace 2010 won't just be the same product with a new name: Microsoft plans to add features that make it easier to deploy and manage. At the same time, Microsoft says that SharePoint Workspace will make it easier to access SharePoint content (or ...

As I contemplate the design that was going to be an organizational upgrade to Exchange 2007 – I am now shifting gears towards skipping to an upgrade of Exchange 2010. Some things that are influencing my decision: The ability to use lower tier storage without compromising performance on the mailbox server. Thanks to all of the database optimizations like sequential writes, db schema re-design and table optimization, cache changes, etc. The database is now truly a portable and replicable object. Now ...
I am currently working on a project where we are using the .net web browser control in designer mode. This allows you to use the control as an html editor. There are numerous posts out there on this control. Tim Anderson has a great post on using the html editor control and utilizing allot of its built in features. One feature the control did not have out of the box was the ability to click on an anchor tag when using the editor in design mode. This behavior is in outlook when creating an email in ...
A friend of mine was looking for a tool today to extract a list of names and email addresses from a folder in outlook. I know that Outlook has a comprehensive COM based object model which I figured that I should be able to access from Powershell. I quick search turned up articles from both James Manning and Lee Holmes on automating Outlook from Powershell (which I think I have come across before). A bit of poking around using the get-member helped me locate the properties I needed and resulted in ...
Wow! If you have any sense of humor you have to see what Google has come up with now! As many of you know, you can set your Microsoft Outlook to have an automatic out of office reply. I will detail some tips on how to do that in a second. However, how great would it be to have an automatic, politician like, non-committal spin generator for when you are out of the office, instead? Leave it to the Geniuses at Google to add this feature to Gmail! Talk about an office productivity booster, instead of ...
If you have Outlook 2007 installed, you already have a built in RSS feed aggregator. I used to rely entirely on Google Reader for my feed, but I’ve grown to love the convenience of having my email and RSS feeds in one interface. Setting it up is stupid simple. First, there’s the blatent RSS folder that’s part of the treeview in Outlook 2007: Right click and select ‘Add new RSS feed’ Put in the URL of your favourite blog… And voila! Instant information goodness delivered straight to your Outlook! ...

I'm sure I can't be the only one who had problems trying to sync up my contacts between a Sony Ericsson mobile phone and a Windows Mobile based phone. The following are some of the PIM programs I've tried and I can report that the latest version of Sony Ericsson PC Suite now supports syncing your contacts to Microsoft Outlook! I'm pretty sure this is a recent feature addition as I have used the Sony Ericsson PC Suite before and never saw the syncing to Outlook option. PIM Outlook contacts management: ...
Then look no further than Evernote. I had heard about this app for awhile and even had it languishing on my iPhone never to be used. Then I started to look in to it as I tried to find something that would let me merge notes from my Mac and my Windows virtual machines. Not only is it cross-platform, but you can synchronize all of your notes over the internet between desktops, laptops and mobile devices. It is much more than a note taking app, with the ability to make web clippings and translate the ...
So you just bought a shiny new Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 and got it all installed with everything working. You even get yourself a SANs certificate to overcome the autodiscover.domain.com problem with Outlook. http://technet.microsoft.co... Then it happens.... One of the things I enjoy about a subscription to MSDN is access to all of the latest versions software. So when Installing Office 2007 some time ago, I installed OneNote as well. I did not get the point of this application at first, however I have found OneNote to be a useful tool for keeping track of my To Do items, as well creating a detailed list of Items for a specific project I am working on. What I find especially useful is the ability to create cascading to do items. Outlook provides a task ...

Last week was a pretty hectic week. Started off well, then I got a call around 9:15 PM on Monday evening from a colleague saying that he noticed some mails still in his outbox. After relaxing for a few minutes (dude...I'd just got home) I connected to the server. I noticed everthing was extremely sloooooow. Every window I opened up took forever to launch. So I decided to check the "Task Manager" processes. I noticed the GFIScanM.exe was racing away at 100% CPU cycle. I then tried to check the mail ...
“Shower the people you love with love, show them the way that you feel.” - James Taylor Today is Valentine’s Day. It’s a day that card, chocolate, and flower shops have been preparing for for weeks. People will be giving gifts, sharing moments, taking significant others out to dinner, opening cards, baking cookies with their kids, etc. etc. Last week I’m sure schools had Valentine parties where kids decorated boxes that others would put Transformer or Barbie themed valentine’s into. And of course, ...

I have always had all sound schemas set to no audible alert for an incoming email. So when Outlook all of a sudden started (very loudly) beeping at me every time I received an email, I was going nuts. Not to mention I almost hit the ceiling if one came at a time of deep concentration. (I do not know the cause, but it starting happening just after Windows downloaded a flurry of updates.) Thankfully, one of my tweeps knew the solution: Start run –> net stop beep It worked!! I am once again receiving ...

Sometimes new features are added to a language which fundamentally change how we do things (e.g., when generics was added to .NET 2.0). However, there are other times when features are added to the language that are “syntax sugar” or “nice to have’s”. My outlook on those items has always been that “syntax sugar” is typically a good thing – if there is some feature that allows the code to be more expressive/readable then that is a great thing. Sure, the IL might not be any different behind the scenes ...
Just in case you weren’t convinced that I read it all of the time, I’m referencing another article from Computerworld. In it, the writer discusses how President-elect Barack Obama’s stimulus could create thousands of IT jobs. This is good news for you and great news for me!! So watch the stimulus closely to see how you or your organization can utilize it. Even without the stimulus, the article continues to say that the IT job outlook for 2009 is better than other industries. So keep on coding, troubleshooting ...
You know that instance, where you're sitting at home and that vital set of airline tickets or shopping list arrives to you by email, which you pickup on your mobile device (Windows Mobile, iPhone, Android, etc). Of course for things like flight tickets its no good taking your phone to the check in desk and waving it in front of the nice person at the check in desk. (Although I guess that might work). Before you say anything, yes I do no about check in online, but stick with it. What I'm trying to ...
It's true, I'm a Gmail junkie. I've been using Gmail pretty much since the first week it was available. I don't know what I'd do without it. In addition to email, I use it as a massive filing cabinet for all kinds of stuff I just never know if I might need or not... it's always accessible and whatever I stuck in it, I can find with just a quick search term or two. Lately, they added a couple of new features worth mentioning. 1) SMS chat in gTalk is pretty cool, though I don't text nearly as much ...

How do you stay up on new technologies? How do you approach learning a specific new technology? The first thing you have to accept is that the Microsoft technology stack has gotten so vast that it is simply impossible for a single person to be an expert in everything. This is the most important aspect to remember. This post is simply to describe my personal approach for staying up on new technologies in the hopes that other people will find something valuable in this to add to their toolbox. In terms ...
Get email addressees of all users from all mails in Outlook Folder Original Article: http://msmvps.com/blogs/oma... Sometimes you want to send some important notice to everyone who has ever mailed you. Let's say you have a folder named "Friends" in Outlook where you store all the emails from your friends. at about 11.33am IST - Outlook Toaster pops up notifying of an email whose subject read "Michael Crichton passes away”. time froze; the second seemed to last forever. I hate to rant, but what is the deal with no Outlook for Mac OS X? How hard is it to port this application over? My guess is not too hard, however, if *every* great Microsoft app was available for OS X then the reasons for running Windows would diminish quickly. I was running native OS X for awhile (no Windows BootCamp or virtual machines) but was killed by the lack of a few apps it became clear I relied quite a bit on: Microsoft Outlook 2007 Microsoft OneNote 2007 Microsoft Visio Professional 2007 ...
For the past three weeks I have been testing the new Nokia e71 and Apple’s iPhone 3g. Both phones are well built and deliver as promised in almost all areas. Below I will give a few tidbits about my experiences with each one. I am also at the same time working on deploying Microsoft’s System Center Mobile Device Manager (SCMDM). This will not come in to play with either of these devices though. Although they have licensed and support Exchange ActiveSync, SCMDM will only support devices running a ...

UPDATE: October 8, 2008 If you are using Outlook 2003, 2007 you would have experienced the Desktop Mail Alert that comes up when a new email is received. It typically shows up in the right bottom above the system tray. While it is very useful to get a glimpse of the content as well as decide on whether to read the email or not, it can take up memory resources and occasionally make Outlook hang, particularly if you are parallelly running memory intesive applications such as Visual Studio, a few Excel ...
