Getting Rules from an exchange account configured in Outlook is pretty easy if we understand the hierarchy of the API. I banged my head for 2 days to get the exact function and attributes to get them. Keeping it here hoping that it will help someone who are searching for the same. Dim olRules As Outlook.Rules = Globals.ThisAddIn.Applicati... For Each olRule As Outlook.Rule In olRules If olRule.Conditions.From.Reci... > 0 Then ' CONDITION: FROM EMAIL Dim exUser ...
After we moved user mailboxes from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010, we had several users report issues with Communicator 2007 R2. Issue: There was a problem connecting to Microsoft Office Outlook. The e-mail address used in your default Outlook profile is different from the sign-in address used in Communicator. Change your default Outlook profile to match the sign-in address you are using in Communicator, and then sign out and sign back in to Communicator. Fix: We have a very large Exchange 2003 environment ...
It is a horrible sight to watch a project fail. There are few things as bad. Watching a project fail regardless of the reason is almost like sitting in a room with a "Dementor" from Harry Potter. It will literally suck all of the life and joy out of the room. Nearly every project that I have seen fail has failed because of political challenges or management challenges. Sometimes there are technical challenges that bring a project to its knees, but usually projects fail for less technical reasons. ...

This is the sample code for getting Email accounts which are configured in Outlook 2007. This is developed using native code of VSTO. We can also implement is using 3rd party libraries like Redemption. Dim olAccounts As Outlook.Accounts = Globals.ThisAddIn.Applicati... Dim acc As Outlook.Account MessageBox.Show(“No. of accounts: ” & olAccounts.Count.ToString) If olAccounts.Count > 0 Then ReDim emails(olAccounts.Count) For Each acc In olAccounts MessageBox.Show(“Name: ...
We started using TFS to track requests using Work items. 1. Telerik's TFS Work Item Manager (beta version for TFS 2010 is available) that could be interesting to use instead of standard VS2010, especially for someone who doesn’t want to have VS installed on their machine.(thanks to dimarzionist who pointed to the tool).See also TFS Project Dashboard 2.Visual Studio TFS work item attachments Tab I've found that Outlook emails can be dropped to TFS work item attachments. Maybe it's just me but I found this "Security Feature" of Office 2010 a bit annyoing out of the box. Outlook does not download any pictures by default for HTML emails. Now this is nothing new, but what is different is that Outlook 2010 has added another layer of security around the pictures. You now have the option to finely tune when things are downloaded. The side affect is that nothing is downloaded at all. And when I would click on "Download Images" on an email, it still would not show the images. ...
Do you want to develop an add-in targeting multiple versions of Office? And you have basic questions like “Is it possible to do? ” and “How to do it?” ? Then you came to the right place. Few months back, I got a requirement to developed add-ins for Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2007. The functionality for both the versions is same. A doubt stroked… when the functionality is same, why would I develop two add-ins separately? Why don’t I make a single build for both the versions of Office? Then I started ...
Being a huge nerd, I decided that I would go ahead and upgrade to the latest and greatest office. That being, Office 2010 Professional Plus. The biggest concern that I had was loosing all my mail settings from Outlook 2007. Thankfully, it upgrade gracefully and worked like a charm. So lets start this top 10 list. 1) You can upgrade without fear of loosing all your stuff! As you can tell by the screenshot below, you can select what you want to do. I selected to remove all previous versions. 2) Outlook ...
Office 2010 has released to manufacturing. The bits have left the (product team’s) building. Will you upgrade? This version of Office is officially numbered 14, a designation that correlates with the various releases, through the years, of Microsoft Word. There were six major versions of Word for DOS, during whose release cycles came three 16-bit Windows versions. Then, starting with Word 95 and counting through Word 2007, there have been six more versions – all for the 32-bit Windows platform. Skip ...

Since my first UUCP operation in UNIX to deliver and receive an email, I have always been challenged to find the ultimate email organizer. About a year ago, I switched to a very simple process of managing email and have found the ultimate in organization. On the craziest of days with 250+ emails, I keep my inbox empty. Here is how I do it; First, start with the following folders in your mailbox; Inbox Archive FollowUp Hold Of course, all inbound emails will start in the Inbox. As you work throughout ...

Left the Circus Circus and headed to the geek circus at Mandalay Bay. Got in, got some breakfast, met a few more people and headed to the keynote. Upon arriving the crew I was hanging with at the event; Erik Mork, Beth Murray, and Brian Henderson and I were entertained with several other thousand geeks by the wicked yo-yoing. The first video demo of something was of Bing Maps and various aspects of Microsoft Research integrated together. Namely the pictures, put in place, on real 3d element maps ...

We had something odd happen in our office the other day. We finally installed Office 2007. Most of us had no issues at all. However, one of our co-workers installed it on her machine and then applied the patches/service packs as recommended. Initially, her Outlook would crash every time she tried to use it, so she fully installed and then reinstalled….which took care of the crashing but.... Every time she got a text email, it was blank. She could highlight the text in the email, then copy/paste it ...
Today’s briefing by Microsoft on their re-booted mobile platform and strategy was very impressive. The prototype hardware they showed looked great and the UI was attractive, productive and unique; it was not an iPhone knock off. Microsoft seemingly brought to bear what it should have long ago: all the cool technologies and properties it already has. Zune, Office with OneNote, Outlook and Exchange, SharePoint, Xbox, Bing Search and Bing Maps all look to be represented and integrated elegantly, rather ...
As I talked about in a previous post, a common solution for companies running Exchange is to use redirection to dump all incoming user request to the OWA sub directory on the CAS server. HTTP to HTTPS redirection is also commonly implemented. Recently I found a gotcha to this configuration. When a user connected with Outlook Anywhere does a Send/Receive, it will hang on the Offline Address Book, sometimes permanently until either the task is cancelled or Outlook is restarted. After a long while of ...
For quite a while now I’ve been wondering if our culture of text messages, emails, messenger/chat conversations, short YouTube clips, rapid-fire news channels, PodCasts, blog posts, Twitter, and Facebook updates is somehow hurting my ability to focus on and develop deeper concepts. By that I mean really dig in, learn, and add value to some larger-then-me idea. As I write these few sentences, emails are streaming in, the phone is ringing, and no doubt my friends and family are Tweeting and writing ...
I am just trying to put my hands into VSTO in VS 2010. This is just an overview of that based on Saurabh Bhatia`s PDC Presentation. Some important points are briefly discussed in this post. Have a look. One of the biggest hurdles with VSTO is deployment. As you probably know, the pre-requisites for running a VSTO app (even of the simplest Hello World variety) include: .NET Framework 3.5 Primary Interop Assemblies (PIAs) VSTO Runtime (Plus Office of course) Now, packaging these isn’t the issue, since ...

I decided to replace my Office 2010 Technical Preview with the Beta, which was released in November and I ran into an error with activation. Since I didn’t see this really documented on the net (it probably is, but I couldn’t find it), I decided to write up my experience. When I first tried to install the beta, I got an error saying that I had to first uninstall the technical preview. Ok, no problem. After uninstalling the tech preview, I installed the beta. It never prompted me for a license key ...
I bought into the hype as so many others did: Office 2010 could be installed side by side with Office 2007 on the same machine. I jumped in blindly, hoping beyond hope that there wouldn’t be any issues or weird nuances that typically plague a beta release. What was I thinking?! First off, Office 2010 and 2007 *can* be installed side by side…except for Outlook which is sort of a big deal. You can only run one version of Outlook on a machine at any given time. So while Word, Access, Excel, and PowerPoint ...
I have just had a fun time with this one! The problem is seen in many Microsoft public newsgroups: When clicking on a hyperlink in an e-mail, I get this Message : "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator." I get this message every time that I attempt to use the hyperlink. I am the administrator on this stand alone computer. How do I deactivate this feature so that I activate hyperlinks ? So firstly this is not an Outlook ...

So I've been looking for a long time for a good outlook iphone sync solution. My work uses exchange, and does not expose the appropriate ports outside the firewall to allow for good syncing. Some alternatives 1) Forwarding, gets the email there, but now I have to delete 2x 2) xpressmail or other carrier provided forwarding solutions - works great, but not offered on iphone or android! 3) 3rd party forwarding solutions - most not supported by iphone, and $$ 4) normal exchange - 100% solution, if your ...
Http to Https redirection is commonly a preferred configuration for Outlook Web Access for most organizations. The challenges presented in IIS7 are that the built-in redirection feature only allows relative redirection without a full URL entered. To perform Http to Https, the full URL is required. This becomes an issue when organizations are trying to redirect for both internal and external users who commonly are using different URLs to access the server. The solution is 2 fold. First, turn on relative ...
Our company does not have a full SIP phone integration with with Microsoft Communicator. It is used for presence and IM. In Outlook, I like to use the Dialer (as I have my laptop modem plugged into my Phone {which is plugged into OOMA – yea baby!}) to save all those seconds. However, if MOC is running, then when I launch the Outlook Dialer, it pops up MOC and tells me that feature is not operational. Here is how to use the plain old TAPI dialer. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE... ...
Like many developers I have chosen to upgrade to Windows 2008 to test enterprise scenarios. I have a virtual environment that I want to test in isolation from my local machine. I'm currently trying to test some email functionality that will notify users in a windows workflow. In Windows 2003 this is really easy to do because you have the ability to setup a POP3 server to setup one or more email accounts to test this type of functionality. Unfortunately, I discovered two key missing features in Windows ...
When one of our users attempted to synchronize a Windows Mobile 6.1 device in our Exchange 2003 SP2 environment, the user would see the green Synchronizing icon continuously spin clockwise until it timed-out. We confirmed that the mobile device was able to connect successfully to the user’s mailbox but would not synchronize the contents of the mailbox with the user’s mobile device. In a nutshell, we use ISA Servers and Exchange 2003 Front-End servers in our Exchange ActiveSync environment. So, while ...

To read all posts in this series, or to get started with the RSSBus WebPart, go here. #7 – Search Email History One of my good friends here recently asked me to give him an easy way to quickly bring up a list of email correspondence to and from a particular email address over the past 6 months. This way, if he is assisting someone on the telephone or email, he can ...
This post is common knowledge to all SharePoint professionals out there, but for newbie's it can save hours of hair pulling (as I’ve got to learn from a bunch of people I’ve helped out) ;) Scenario: There is a distribution list you can see and use in outlook, but when you search for the same list in SharePoint it doesn’t show up in the people picker. What gives? Chances are that the distribution list is not security enabled. This would need to be done by your domain administrator. He would need to ...

The Winnipeg SharePoint UG is back for another year of events and presentations! This Month: Enhancing Connected SharePoint Lists in Outlook 2007 Eric Legault, Microsoft Outlook MVP It's really easy to link an Events, Contacts or Tasks list in WSS to Outlook 2007. If you are using Windows Vista or above and also Windows Mobile Pocket PC or Smart Phone, you would have definitely stumbled upon Windows Mobile Device Center. It is a one stop place for synchronizing your phone data with your PC i.e. Contacts, Tasks, Emails, Calendar etc., Today, while I was setting up my new phone, I accidentally deleted the SIM contacts and worst, synchronized it with my PC using the WMDC and gosh, all the contacts from my Outlook got removed as well. It was frustrating and kept ...
Ever met a geek with an AOL email account? Probably not. Ever wanted to migrate someone you know from AOL to Gmail? Your wife or Mom maybe, so you could share docs, calendars and stuff?? Well here is the easiest method, assuming of course that you have MS Outlook. 1. Fire up Outlook, you don't need to create an email account, creating a profile without email support works just fine. 2. Goto https://www.forge.funambol.... and download the AOL sync at the bottom of the page. 3. Run the program, ...
As previously mentioned I have lived with Beta and RC before arriving at Release. Downside has been the re-builds. The upside and this is Goodie #2 is the ability to use VHD’s mounted as ‘real’ hard drives has been a saviour! I have setup a number of Virtual drives and when I boot in I re-mount them. I have a Data drive (docs and outlook achieve), Software Installs drive (my downloads drive really), Code drive and finally and iTunes drive. Once a week I copy off each VHD to my NAS at home. So when ...
As many of us are aware, hosted exchange providers are popping up everywhere...and with good reason as there are tremendous benefits to this model. There are two models of hosted exchange. The first one has been in existence for a long time and is also referred to as managed exchange server. Essentially this is a dedicated Exchange server or server farm that serves only one organization. Many large entities have been using this model for ages through providers like Ceryx (winner of Microsoft’s 2008 ...
Do you have a new feature you would like to see added to a Word? Maybe you have a complaint about how something in Excel works… Maybe you would like to see a specific feature in Outlook changed… or maybe you would like to make your voice heard on complaints or new features suggested by others. If so, then you will like the new site, MakeOfficeBetter.com. Is this an official Microsoft site? No, but it is the brainchild of one of the product planners on the Office team, Steve Zaske. I think this is ...
We have identified a serious issue with responding to calendar invitations using an iPhone with the latest 3.0 update. When you accept an invitation, the meeting organizer sees the response coming from the first person to respond to the invitation and leaves your attendee status set to "no response". This means that using your iPhone to accept/reject calendar invitations will significantly interfere with organizing meetings. This is only the case when iPhone users accepting from the same domain...ie ...
I have recently completed work on a WPF application which required a reasonable amount of interaction with Microsoft Outlook. Specifically, we needed to implement two operations: firstly, we needed the ability to generate a new email and open it in Outlook (without sending it); and secondly, we needed to send an email via Outlook behind the scenes, without any user interaction. There were a couple of additional requirements affecting how this functionality could be implemented. One of these was a ...
Here’s another cool new feature of Windows 7, in the task bar. If you have an application that opens files like, Microsoft Word, when you right click on the application icon, you’ll see a list of recently opened documents. You can also pin particular documents there. (Thanks to Paul Thurrott’s article here: http://www.winsupersite.com... I’ve pinned my most common apps in the taskbar, much like Mac OSX’s dock, and it’s growing on me. At first, I thought of the taskbar as cluttered, ...

My group has been working with http://www.nationalrail.co.uk and one of the first deliverables is this beauty, an add-in which integrates Microsoft Outlook 2007 and 2003 with the UK’s National Rail timetable web service to deliver Software + Service in action! Interestingly, the add-in is built using .NET 3.5SP1 which is a fairly hefty dependency to take, but it enabled the application to be delivered much more easily against Outlook. You can find out about Outlook development at our development ...
I wanted to write a blog post to document how I do some day-to-day things. It helps me to keep track of my work habits, refine them and perhaps help some others who are looking for some solutions. My current rig is a Apple MacBook Pro 13” unibody. It has the 250Gb drive with 4Gb memory. I am running the latest version of OS X Leopard. I am really enjoying the 13” form factor. It is a little smaller and lighter than the previous 15” unibody which, to me, just felt heavy. I also don't notice the lost ...
I've been working with the Exchange Web Service (EWS) Managed API wrapper to perform some Exchange tasks. My WEBDAV code wouldn't work with Exchange 2007. The EWS Managed API is much easier to work with then the direct Exchange web service calls. Thanks goodness. One task I have is to process inbound mail and flag it as complete. Took me hours to figure it out. First I have a search folder that has the stuff I want to process. This makes it easier to change the business rules in the outlook client ...
Summary In an Exchange 2003 SP2 environment, Outlook 2007 users are unable to send recurring calendar meeting notices (new, updated, or canceled) to external recipients outside of the Exchange Organization. This issue does NOT affect users using Outlook 2003 AND single calendar meeting notices. When they send a recurring calendar meeting notice to an external recipient, several things happen. One, the sender will receive the following NDR after the message expires. ---------------------------... ...
