If you aren't sure what is actually in the backup file, or even if you think you are sure--execute this statement from a fresh query window: RESTORE FILELISTONLY FROM DISK = 'X:\MDD\Clients\Lg\H4\H4L.bak' The information about the mdf/ldf files will show up looking like this: In this example, I was restoring a database to a different server with different filegroups, directory setups, etc.--so I had to 'MOVE' the location paths to represent the drives I had available. If I were restoring to the same ...
I'm diving in the NHibernate 3.2 mapping by code recently. I throught that, mapping a string with specific max length to the appropriate database table will be easy, but it wasn't. I lost some time to figure it out. At the beginning I mapped a string field in that way Property<string>(x => x.Title, x => x.Length(Int32.MaxValue)); After generating the tables in database with my schema, unfortunatelly this field was generated as a nvarchar(255) and I didn't know why. We can deal with it ...

In my current job as a Senior ALM Consultant, part of what I do is help organizations get TFS set up and configured. While a single server installation is pretty easy (and using the basic configuration to install TFS on Windows 7 is even easier), there are a few pitfalls and points of frustration when setting TFS up in a two-server configuration. For the purposes of this discussion, I am assuming the following setup: - A database server (Data Tier) with SQL 2008 R2 to house the TFS Databases, Reporting ...

Alot of calls I get are related to the information store service of the exchange server not starting. Since troubleshooting why this services does not start is often related to alot of stress (after all, your users and managers will be pounding your door as they cannot access their email) it is always handy to have some reference as to where you can start and what direction it can take. This is my basic modus operandi so feel free to give suggestions on how to improve it :). First of all you need ...
It’s cool when you have to use a map of the world to show how your application is deployed. I’ve added a webcast on AppFabric Caching using a very distributed application. The application is tested in Stockholm Sweden with the database located in South East Asia, and the Cache in South-central US. The application is then deployed to the South-central US data center, accessing the database in South East Asia. The point of all this is to show how the AppFabric cache can be used to reduce latency in ...
One thing that’s really got me pumped about the Mango OS update is the inclusion of SQL Compact baked right in. We don’t need to include extra assemblies to get database functionality for our apps, as SQL Compact is a native component in Mango! Before we get all excited thinking we’ll have a full on visual designer experience when developing our apps, realize that this is still an isolate storage based data file that you’ll be using LINQ to SQL to access. There’s no visual designer (yet), which means ...
When you generate an MSI you need to set at least Product Version Product Code Package Code Upgrade code is not mandatory but in reality it is also a must or you will not be able to create upgrade msi packages. One interesting thing about ProductVersion is that you can choose to set a 4 digit version like 1.1.1.0 but MSI will only use the first three digits for version checking. Its format is major.minor.build. This is important if you decide to create a update or upgrade package. Have a look for ...
This is the presentation I did June 29, 2011 at PHILLYNJ.NET. It is the first in a multi-part of a series on the Applied Design Patterns. The solution files are working code with design pattern notes in the comment blocks. After the overview and higher level discussions on Enterprise Design Patterns I reviewed the low level Database Access Library of code. With walk-throughs of the the code and unint test. After that we went through the ProductPhotoConsoleTest Application that performed intergration ...
Recently I had several questions concerning how to process files that carry a header and trailer in them. Typically those files are a product of data extract from non Microsoft products e.g. Oracle database encompassing various tables data where every row starts with an identifier. For example such a file data record could look like: HDR,INTF_01,OUT,TEST,3/9/2011 11:23 B1,121156789,DATA TEST DATA,2011-03-09 10:00:00,Y,TEST 18 10:00:44,2011-07-18 10:00:44,Y B2,TEST DATA,2011-03-18 10:00:44,Y B3,LEG ...

I was at the Jazoon 2011 in Zurich (Switzerland). It was a really cool event and it had many top notch speaker not only from the Microsoft universe. It looked really easy with the help of F# Type Providers which is the next big language feature in a future F# version. The object returned by ...
The Membership API came in .NET 2.0 and was a huge enhancement in building web applications with users, managing roles, permissions etc., The Membership API by default uses SQL Express and until Visual Studio 2008, it was available only through the ASP.NET Configuration manager screen (Website – ASP.NET Configuration) or (Project – ASP.NET Configuration) and for every application, one has to manually visit this place to start using the Security and other settings. Upon doing that the default SQL ...
When restoring a database backup, by default, SQL Server places the database files in the master database file directory. In this example, that location is in L:\MSSQL10.CHTL\MSSQL\DATA as shown by the issuance of sp_helpfile Hence, the restored files for the database CHTL_L2_DB are in the same directory Per SQL Server best practices, the log file should be on its own disk drive so that the database and log file can operate in a sequential manner and perform optimally. The steps to move the log file ...
Working with a client in our Multi-tenant CRM environment who was doing a database migration into CRM and as part of the process, a backup of their Organization_MSCRM database was taken just prior to starting the migration in case it needed to be restored and run a second time. In this case it did, so I restored the database and let the client know he should be good to go. A few hours later I received a call that they were unable to add some new users, they would appear as available when using the ...
One of the things that is keeping us busy is the Web Camps we are delivering across 5 cities. Hopefully nothing. But if you have to do more than simple XCopy deployment and you need to support updates, upgrades and perhaps side by side scenarios there is no way around MSI. You can create Msi files with a Visual Studio Setup project which is severely limited or you can use the Windows Installer Toolset. I cannot talk about WIX with my German colleagues because WIX has a very special meaning. It is funny to always use the long name when I talk about deployment possibilities. Alternatively you ...

Since the demo of Windows 8 given by Microsoft Vice President Julie Larson-Green at the recent D9 conference windows developers have been described in many articles as feeling "Horrified" "Worried" "Deeply Concerned". Why? From the demo it seems that the new Window’s 8 ‘immersive’ applications will be based on HTML5 and JavaScript – which means for experienced win devs who have invested years in learning windows development platforms, they will now have to ‘re-train’ if they want to create these ...

I got a question from a developer whether they should use SharePoint lists or database tables to hold the data for his application. This is a fair question and as a consultant I will start with the standard answer: It depends. I will follow up that answer with the standard consultant question: what are you trying to do? There generally isn’t one answer for any technology choice. We need to take as many factors into account as possible. Who will be maintaining the data? Will the data only be used ...
After Dmitri posted DataObjects.Net beta2 last night, I couldn’t wait but test the security framework included. If you have been watching you may know that I worked on the provider for MySQL for DataObjects.NET. I was curious to see how the security framework will feel on MySQL. Well to my ‘extreme’ happiness, after I translated the SalesPoint database into MySQL and testing the sample it worked very beautifully. I only had to change the URL in the App.Config file. I have attached the SQL script ...
MVC 3 is becoming hugely popular thanks to Razor and the Helpers that make building web applications much easier. One of the common requirements in web development, both with web forms as well as MVC based development, is the cascading dropdownlist. Now, for Web Forms, we can use a variety of options viz. server side programming, jQuery or using the AJAX Control Toolkit’s cascading dropdownlist control for accomplishing this. I saw a few samples on the internet that used the erstwhile Microsoft AJAX ...
I hit this error when I deployed an app built with Entity Framework onto Windows Azure. Obviously, I wasn’t explicitly using DataReader so it kind of puzzled me. As it happens every time It worked well with local database, application running local and database on SQL Azure. But once I used the Dev Fabric to test the application locally, it failed and gave the above error. Entity Framework relies on using Multiple Active Results Sets (MARS), and it would be a part of connection string multipleactiveresultsets=True. ...

LocalStorage() is one of the new features of HTML5 that found widespread use among PC and phone developers. It can save up to 5MB of data locally, on a user device in a key-value database inside a web browser. Data can be retrieved only from a device where was permanently saved until it gets deleted by user or programmatically. To be able to take advantage of this and other HTML5 features, user needs to have a compatible browser. Currently, at the time I am writing this post, there is no browser ...
Our database has a few lookup tables that uses similar approach to implemented by .Net Framework for localized resources: At run time, ASP.NET uses the resource file that is the best match for the setting of the CurrentUICulture property. If there is no match for the current UI culture, ASP.NET uses resource fallback. It starts by searching for resources for a specific culture. If those are not available, it searches for the resources for a neutral culture. If these are not found, ASP.NET loads the ...

SQL Tidbits Have you ever had a need to see storage information for all your databases in a SQL Server? As they say there are many ways to skin a cat all based on your need. Browser 'Refresh' is always a cause of concern for the developers. It becomes even more worse when the page interacts with the database. As each refresh, if not handled, would lead to the database action repeated. This could lead to inconsistency in database or even break the application. One way could be to detect 'refresh' using javascript and disable F5 or right click..but there are so many other ways end-user can initiate 'Refresh' action for e.g. by using CTRL+R on the keyboard... The best way ...

We have two Azure cloud projects, and they both started refusing to start at about the same time, with different error messages. One of the greatest benefits of building your solution flies in MSBuild (vs in Visual Studio directly) is that it doesn't lock up the Visual Studio UI, which can be a huge pain if you have a large solution that takes several minutes (or longer) to build. Building your solution in MSBuild leaves you free to inspect code in Visual Studio while your solution is building. The only problem is that to do this you have to open a command prompt and type the command + path every time to build. If you want ...
