Two problems have appeared:
- Windows Update and Recovery is unresponsive – the page just show the circular hourglass thingy (what is it called?); also prevents shutting down Windows and I have to force it.
- Start menu no longer works – just have the standard Windows 7 UI. Some would say that was an improvement but I wouldn’t regard them as being particularly helpful.
So I’ve found KB3035129 (Windows 10 Technical Preview Update Rollup: January 27, 2015) has a fix for, amongst others:
A fix for an issue that could cause the Start Menu to be improperly registered and fail to launch
which sounds a good match. Wouldn’t be surprised if Windows Update is stuck trying to download it.
As I can’t use Windows Update, I try the Microsoft Update Catalog where I should be able to manually download any hotfix. Oops…

Luckily my home server allows me to download it.
